Gustavsson's definitely making me eat my words about him from earlier in the season, and I couldn't be happier about it.
But the thing is he actually looks like a different goalie out there. He's generally not flopping around like he used to, he's in position more, he doesn't overplay or fight the puck. It's very strange to see his form as it is just so damned good lately!
The thing is Gustavsson has to maintain this for the long haul now. We've seen spurts from him in the past where he's been solid for a number of starts only to drop off later for whatever reason. I recall at one point he had won 7 consecutive decisions for the Leafs. If he keeps this level of play up for the remainder of the season we can all become believers.
yes..it's just that "for whatever reason" tended to be heart surgery...
Gus won 7 straight starts in March 2010 and then lost his next 3 to end that season. He started 2011 badly and never got into a groove until he was sidelined by heart procedure #3 in Feb 2011.
He didn't start the 2010-2011 season. The team couldn't score for him and he lost games despite playing well.
October 1-2-0 2.36 GAA .921 SV%
November 2-4-2 2.66 GAA .912 SV%
He fell apart in very late November and his December and two apperances in January was consistently awful. How is that starting the season poorly? Mind you that last game he played was a 7-0 loss where the Leafs didn't show up from the first face-off right until the end of the game.
