Game 6 - Toronto Maple Leafs @ Boston Bruins L6-2

I sure hope the Leafs win tomorrow night or the cries of "it's just like last year!" will begin in earnest.

I've already been chirped first thing this morning about how bad the Leafs are. FFS they're 4-1-1.

And it was by a Habs fan nonetheless. Sometimes I wonder.

There are 3-4 legitimate reasons why we lost that game. I mean come on! Were some folks expecting 50 wins or something this year? Jeesh!

Nah, I just find that a lot of Hab fans in particular are more anti-Leaf fans than actually fans of their own team.

Habits are hard to change.  I also happen to be a die-hard Detroit Lions fan, and after their 1st loss Sunday many Lions fans started to panic..."here we go again."

After so many years of losing, you just expect it.

It's true. I work with a hardcore Bruins fan who oddly knows way more about the Leafs than most Leaf fans I know... I call him a closet Leaf fan which drives him nuts. Really, I just know there's a Leaf fan inside of everyone.  :D

Not surprised the Leafs didn't win in Boston.  Wasn't expecting them to win, neither.  Bracing for a scoreless Kessel in this game, as has been the case oftentimes when he plays the Bruins, especially in their own rink.

As for Gustavvson,  he needs to play a little more.  I would like to see that happen sooner rather than later.  Still believe that along with Reimer, Gustavvson can provide some measurably good netminding for the team.  All is not lost.

a big THIS.

And some of them complain about all the attention the Leafs get.  Guess who's a hypocrite?

I KNOW! I mean all I heard today/last night was about how much the Leafs suck. Habs fans, Sens fans, Canucks fans, they can all shove off. Worry about your own team first.

I don't point a finger at Gus on this one. The Leafs aren't going to beat better teams playing 40 minutes or less per game (which they have done so far)

...and the secondary scoring needs to happen. I think it will as Kulemin and Grabovski get themselves going.

Boston really came at Gus last night and he did make some key saves, the team just didn't have enough to respond.

Boston played really well and Thomas was on his game.

The loss is obviously not his fault but he sure seemed to fold after a few goals compared to Reimer.

That's just not true. Gus was very good in a second period where the Leafs had a ton of opportunities to get back in the game. He couldn't carry the team all by himself but that's not really a fair criticism.

Agreed. And i don't understand Wilson's thinking in having Gus play in that game. I mean, playing the Stanley Cup champs who were off to a slow start and had just been humbled by Carolina. You've got to think they were pissed and ready to break out. Then put in a goalie who is trying to rebuild his confidence for his first start this year??!! Behind a tired Leaf team?

Yeah but he didn't play badly. The Leafs played badly. I think the coaching staff saw in Gustavsson what most of us saw. A guy who played the best he could behind a team that wasn't ready to play.

Unfortunately for Gustavsson, I think they also saw what some of us did, and that's a goalie with poor body language that essentially screams to his teammates: "I've given up on you".

Gustavsson doesn't lack confidence in himself. He lacks confidence in his teammates.

I agree with your assessment. My point is that it was a tough situation to put Gus in. If Reimer had played last night and lost I think he would not be crushed. Because goaltending is so much mental, I worry that it sends Gus into a downward spiral. If he started with a few easier assignments (which teams usually give backups) he could have built confidence and the Leafs would have another goalie playing well.

I think that once Gustavsson glared at his teammates, that was a bad sign.  Whenever a team changes it's style because of the goalie, I think it's a bad sign.  The Leafs last night didn't look like they wanted to take too many chances, although it's hard to say how much of that was brought on by the Bruins relentless forecheck.

it was the toughest game of the season so far. and a second consecutive night. not a good time to put in Gus IMHO.
