Just think, if OTT had come back to win that game, we would be talking about a pretty mediocre start, rumors would be flying about Wilson, etc.  Like I said yesterday in the GDT, our 4-0-1 start flattered us a bit.

Just think, if Montreal had scored one more goal in their playoff series with Boston, they wouldn't be the defending champs!  ;D

Ifs and buts!  :P

I guess the nuance was lost on you there.

And I guess the smilies were lost on you there.

Bruins fans chanting "Thank you Kessel." Finally, Leafs and Bruins fans agree on something.

I guess we put our foot in our mouth tonight, huh Busta? They almost scored 7 after all.

It happens. Boston scoring 6 certainly wasn't the smart money coming into the game tonight.

No winky smiley, my friend!  The top is a guffaw and the tongue-out conveys a gentle irony.

I know we've got 9 of 12 points now but what's worrying is that without Kessel's production I think we have somewhere between 0 and 2.

It certainly wasn't. I would have never predicted that score for them.

While I missed the nuance, I certainly did not miss the nuisance.

Gustavsson has only faced the 40 shots so far with 8 minutes to go.

I feel for the kid, he was playing up to par and then, just started fading away the more the Bruins scored.

The loss is obviously not his fault but he sure seemed to fold after a few goals compared to Reimer.

I think everyone is liking Reimer a little more after this. This was an opportunity for Monster to show something against the defending champs and he failed miserably. Sure they didn't play the greatest in front of him, but his work tonight wasn't NHL calibre.

I think this if awfully harsh.

Gus held them in through the second period, many point blank saves.

This is the first "good" team that the Leafs have faced this year and it's been an eye-opener for everyone - they aren't as good as their record would indicate. Hand up if you're surprised.

If Reimer plays tonight, the same thing happens.

What is interesting, though, is how the commentators (and fans, apparently) are quick to pile on Gus. The first goal was off a rebound. Most goalies will tell you that the goalie is responsible for the first save - after that, the defence should be clearing the puck. (This is simplistic, obviously - part of the goalie's union.) Other goals were second or third shots. Yet, the commentators are blaming the Monster very quickly. Reimer has allowed similar goals without the immediate criticism.

:'( :) :-* ;) :-\ ;D :-X >:( :-[ :( :P :o ::) 8) ???

Incidentally, I miss the old blue ones.  They were more graceful.

I wouldn't start pointing fingers and trying to place blame in this one. It was a team loss and they all let each other down.

Well, these guys agree with me:

FriedgeHNIC Elliotte Friedman
Gustavsson: Carolina rested Cam Ward against good teams last year. But, Maple Leafs not exactly putting him in a position to succeed.

jamescybulski James Cybulski
@FriedgeHNIC Exactly. For a goaltender that lost his confidence last year, its almost like Gustavsson was set up to fail against champs

His inability to properly handle a 50-foot shot may have hurt his confidence in the early going too.

Gus gave up way too many rebounds tonight. This has been a problem with him for a while. The team failed to clear the net around him, but if Reimer had been in net, I think a lot of those rebound chances (which our D did screw up on) wouldn't have existed.

The Leafs want to give Gustavsson a chance to take the #1 job. Playing him against bottom feeders isn't going to convince anyone. He got unlucky that the team chose to crap the bed tonight, but he didn't exactly display the kind of fortitude you need from your starter by giving up after the 4th goal, which is what he did IMO.

I thought it was a good idea to start him tonight, and I thought that he played well enough to walk away from this loss knowing there wasn't anything else he could have done, but it looked to me like he just lost it after the 4th goal.

Well first off, Reimer started with a shutout, so he bought himself some leeway. He's also 4-0-1 with respectable if not spectacular numbers through 5 starts.

The thing is Reimer had a great season last year and has delivered so far this season. Gus has had 2 poor seasons and showed again tonight that there are still big questions in his game (although I thought he made some great saves in the 3rd).

As to the goals tonight. The first one he missed with his glove hand. It wasn't a shot into the pads where it can be difficult to control the direction of the rebound. He should've caught it but didn't. That directly resulted in a goal. The 5th goal was his fault. He should've had it.

Had he saved those 2:
39 saves on 43 shots = .906 Sv%  respectable even in
                                                  a losing effort

.860 Sv% (37sv on 43 shots) when you're trying to keep the back-up job? Ain't gonna cut it.
