General Leafs Talk: Post-Olympics Edition

You know what's funny, if it wasn't for the shortened season last year they would have missed the playoffs. Everyone said that was what would have happened and it looks like they were right.

We fans get emotional and expect too much from our team lets not loose sight on the fact that this team stinks...they snuck into the last playoff spot last year and they tried to do it again this year, this is hardly a good team, medicore at best... overhaul needed

Lack of talent I understand.  I'll happily cheer for a team that sucks, but tries hard.

Lack of effort, though?  Screw that.

Then you're cheering for the wrong team. This is a team that doesn't suck, but doesn't try hard enough, so they do suck.....make sense?

I'm sorry... but not one person predicted an 8 game pointless streak. If they even won 1 game and brought one to overtime during that stretch this wouldn't really even be as big of a problem. That 8 game stretch put the 18 wheeler going off a cliff to shame.

Whether it's an 8 game losing streak or a 1 win in 10 streak or something, it's still valid.  In both 11-12 and this season the Leafs would have made the playoffs in a 48-game season but don't in an 82 game season.  The longer it goes on the more likely/more chance there is that the team can't sustain it's luck - whether that's SH%, SV%, etc.

IMO. This team will be ripped apart in the summer including mangement. I also think it will be two to three years before we make it to the playoffs. I see huge changes in the near future, unfortunately I also see youth being traded away. This is just my opinion.

If the Leafs are coached better they will make the playoffs next year. This team isn't that bad. They're not that good, but they're not that bad...

I think you're overly optimistic. I doubt much of significance happens for next season.

The Leafs season is over. The Marlies have clinched a playoff spot and are very close to clinching their division. Put Bernier on LTIR to make some cap room. Call up Holland and Ashton and play them significant minutes to see what they have. Sit Bolland, there's no point to play an injured player at this point and he's barely getting minutes anyway. Shut down Lupul, who re-aggravated his injury last night and probably shouldn't have played in the first place.

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Raymond-Kadri-Kulemin
D'Amigo-Holland-Ashton
Bodie-McClement-Clarkson

edit: Maybe even swap Leivo for D'Amigo there, as that trio has actually been a line for the Marlies.

edit 2: It's possible they actually can't call-up Leivo, as D'Amigo, Ashton, Holland, and MacIntyre would be the 4 players they've used call-ups on post-deadline (assuming Mac isn't considered an emergency recall).

No, what's funny is that a bunch of hobbyists figured out something a bunch of highly paid professionals did not. The Leafs needed .930 goaltending or an 11% shooting percentage to cover their inability to suppress shots against and to generate shots for -- that was obvious from Game 1.

Didn't even take a bunch of hobbyists to figure that out. Anyone at all familiar with how sports work - even if they'd never watched a second of hockey in their life -  could have seen that by watching a handful of Leaf games this season. The puck possession issues with this team have been that glaringly obvious this season.

Gardiner for Adam Foote.  Straight up.

Roll your eyes all you want, but, nothing helps a team's defensive game like not having to play defence.

This is NHL head coach and former Jack Adams winner Dave Tippett on the subject:

"I'll give you an example," he said. "We had a player that was supposed to be a great, shut-down defenseman. He was supposedly the be-all, end-all of defensemen. But when you did a 10-game analysis of him, you found out he was defending all the time because he can't move the puck.

"Then we had another guy, who supposedly couldn't defend a lick. Well, he was defending only 20 percent of the time because he's making good plays out of our end. He may not be the strongest defender, but he's only doing it 20 percent of the time. So the equation works out better the other way. I ended up trading the other defenseman."

How many Cups has Dave Tippett won?

How many Cups have I won?

If those two numbers are equal, then I know as much as he does.

EDIT: BTW, all that quote proves is that Tippett was wrong about the guy being a good shutdown defenseman.

Caryle has a cup, yet he doesn't get any respect.

McClement, Gleason and Bolland, Ranger and Kulemin (I think) putting on a defensive clinic:

Leafs may shut Lupul down for the year.

Like I said before, shut him and Bolland down and bring up Holland and Ashton.

edit: Team confirms Lupul will have knee surgery, done for the season. I wonder who else will have post-season surgery. Kessel, JVR, Phaneuf, and Gunnarsson all seem to be injured. Bolland and Bernier too of course.

Ferraro "say you're paying Holland $1 mill and Bolland $5 something. Is Bolland $4 million better? Use that money to fix the D"

Yes please (not that I think Bolland is getting that much, but still)

Man, if Bolland gets anywhere near $5M, it better be from some other team.

Yeah, I can't see the Leafs giving him more than Bozak got.

Makes sense. They both had the same career high point total going into free agency. Who needs cap flexibility, right?

Mirtle's really nailing this stuff: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/mirtle-management-miscues-leave-maple-leafs-languishing/article17847414/
