General Leafs Talk v2.0

Leaf fans rejoice!  Some out there still can't believe that...

The Toronto Maple Leafs, class of the East

This is weird:

The Leafs are scoring in bunches, second only to San Jose in goals for and first in their conference. Jonathan Bernier is goaltending up a storm, which has some wondering where the critics of Dave Nonis's offseason moves are now?

...the Leafs look good. And in four games, they'll get David Clarkson back.

I feel good about this season but I am hoping that we are not seeing a reincarnation of the 2011/12 season.  That season we started 4-0-1, then 9-3-1 before the wheels fell off and we finished 26th in the NHL and out of the playoffs.  I guess the difference this season is we haven't played all that well yet and remembering back to that start, everything seemed to click.

3rd in penalty kill and 3rd in power play - nice to see. If special teams continue to do well then it's easy to see how the points will follow. This is a long way from the Wilson days when they were last in PK at times.

More accurate to say the Toskala years because they didn't change much in terms of PK style from Wilson to Carlyle.  It's almost - almost - as if goaltending makes a huge difference.

I would agree with that, minus the unnecessary sarcasm. I simply classified them as the Wilson years without really meaning to attribute it all to him.

I'm a sarcastic person in my day-to-day life, I don't shut that off when I log on here.  I didn't insult you, take it easy.

It reminds me though, somewhere last season I read a piece that commented on the continuity of the PK between coaching changes.  Will have to dig it up.

The goalie likely makes the biggest difference, but there are also different players (skaters) to work with too. I mean, even a better percentage on face-offs would contribute to a better PK. And also somewhere you have to give some credit to a coach when things are working properly.

My argument is just that, give both coaches the same goaltending and I don't think the results would be that far off.  I believe it's one of the assistants (Scott Gordon I believe) who runs the PK anyways, and they definitely deserve some credit - although I don't think the lion's share of it.  But Carlyle deserves some credit for handing it to the right assistant, and for the group to emphasize being more aggressive.  You're right in that it's the personnel on the ice making the difference, McClement and the goaltending.

As a comparison of the difference, in 2011-12 Reimer had an .808 SV% on the PK.  Last season by March 11 his SV% on the PK was .889.

So apparently after every victory the team celebrates with 'We Can't Stop' by Miley Cyrus in the locker-room, this was selected by Bozak (who has apparently wrestled control of the iPod from Dion).

A lot of the team/journalists have been chirping on twitter re this, I gotta say, watching HBO 24/7 and seeing this group rock out to Miley Cyrus after a win might be one of the funnier sights seen on TV in recent memory.

What Would Gary Roberts Do?

Complain about it to Steve Simmons.

I dont know if this has been posted before. Its from Grantland which is an ESPN entity. It's about stats and the Leafs:

Collision Corsi
This year's test case for advanced stats in the NHL? It's the old-school Toronto Maple Leafs, so ? great. We're sure everyone will be super chill about this.

Worth a read.

I was mostly kidding, but it would be funny to see how one of the battle-hardened, old school guys like Gary Roberts or Scott Stevens would react to youngsters blasting that crap in their dressing room.

Miley Cyrus, eh??!!

?It?s certainly not my choice,? said Leaf forward Joffrey Lupul. ?Whatever. As long as we keep winning, I?ll deal with it.?

Mark Masters @markhmasters
Kessel on who's to blame for Miley Cyrus invasion of Leafs room: 'Probably it?s my buddy?s fault, but you can ask him about it'

Daft Puck @daftpuck
@Bozie42 Can't believe you listen to Miley. She sucks, dude.

Tyler Bozak @Bozie42
?@daftpuck: @Bozie42 Can't believe you listen to Miley. She sucks, dude.?  Sue me, dude.

But of course, mais oui...

Tyler Bozak @Bozie42
