not sure why everyone's so thrown by smithson being sent down...he has been a total waste of time in my opinion.

Smithson might not have been anything special, but his faceoff and penalty killing abilities alone make him 100% more useful than both McLaren and Orr combined.

yes...but not much of a standard to achieve there is it?

I remember him killing a penalty against pitts where he was basically on top of eth goalie, and leaving the shot from the point wide open to the point where the point man could take 3 strides toward the net and then let it fly.

anyways...I think the leafs have many better options within their system

biggs, mckegg, trevor smith, holland, they let colborne walk for NOTHING! (and yes I know he wouldn't have passed through waivers) leivo, ashton, and probably a bunch I\m not thinking of.

anyone can play better on the 4th line than the three that played last night.

This thang.

I'm calling out Nonis right now.  Either he's sitting by allowing to happen, in which case he should be cashiered, or else Carlyle has photos.

BTW I'll have none of this "the GM should let the coach coach and stay out it" crapola.

No, but the issue is still that the team removed a marginally useful forward instead of either of the two completely useless ones. They need to raise the usefulness of the bottom of the roster, not eliminate it.

Man, I was just on behindthenet checking every teams' players Corsi's... even the crappy teams like Edmonton and Buffalo... and my goodness do we ever suck in comparison.  Just absolutely amazingly horri-awful.  From what I can gather and have read, this Maple Leafs squad is the worst Corsi team EVER.

The advance stats crew knew this day of reckoning was coming.

you know who has more points than Orr and Mclaren combined?

Lundqvist with 1.

There are 15 goalies who have more points than Orr and McLaren combined - and one that has more goals!

That's awesome.

Orr and McLaren have combined for 9 shots on net this season. Ovechkin has equalled or surpassed that total in a single game twice already this season. Erik Karlsson has a 9 shot game this season. Stamkos had a 9 shot game before he got hurt. There are possibly others out there as well that I didn't think to look at.

Between Smithson (now waived), Mcclement, Orr, Mclaren and Ashton they had 3 points.  2 assists from Mcclement and an assist from Ashton.  That is one ridiculously bad bottom 6!

Throw in Kulemin's stone hands, a defense that doesn't generate a thing offensively, AHL types in Smith and even Holland (at this point).... and yeah.

:'(

The thing with Mclement and Kulemin is they contribute in other ways - so I can kiiiiiiind of look the other way.

But Orr and Mclaren do absolutely nothing - NOTHING. I mean I used to go nuts watching Belak playing for the Leafs - now we have 2 of them?

People are slamming Carlyle on this, but why Nonis extended Orr is beyond me. How you can have someone as talented as Liles in the AHL and 2 (TWO) of these stiffs on an NHL roster is just inconceivable.

Smithson managed 1 shot this season.

10 shots combined in 42 combined games.

Don't get me started.

And on another point, what exactly does Kulemin do now?  He's not bad, he's not good, he's just... there.  I've probably never been so indifferent on a player ever.  Whether he's in the lineup or not, I don't even notice.  I don't care one way or another.

He's become pretty useless imo.  Which is sad considering that epic season, what was it 3 years ago now?  4?  How the heck he potted 30 goals I will never know.

He's pretty solid still.  Good possession player.  Look at last night's game - only him and Holland among the forwards were positive in shot attempts for/against.

Last season he was quietly on a 40 point pace while playing tough defensive minutes.

He's basically a strong 3rd line checker, but I imagine he could put up more points if given an offensive role (whereas I can't imagine that out of McClement).

Grabovski had everything to do with that - they really reminded me of Reichel/Domi - the way they would cycle and make things happen.

Obviously the 30 goals were an aberration, but as a 3d/4th liner I have no issue with him.

Well, that's really pretty simple - Carlyle likes to have a couple face punchers in the lineup, and, to some extent, Nonis has to build a roster that fits his coach. Carlyle likes Orr, so he probably pushed to have him re-signed. Nonis shouldn't have relented, but it's entirely understandable as to why he did.

I don't even know what to respond with, without repeating myself.

I'll leave it that I miss the Kule-Grabbo-Mac line.

At what cost do the Leafs re-sign him though?  Is he worth the $3.5 to 4 million he will likely be seeking/commanding for this type of role?

Well, in my opinion no. I'm not attached to the guy. He's here now and that's fine, but if he walks I'd get over it pretty quickly.

It's the fact that he gave them both two year deals that killed me.
