General Leafs Talk v2.0

With the Leafs goaltending, that D probably wouldn't be any worse than what it is now.  And then we'd have the added bonus of getting out from under those cap hits, instead of praying Gleason regains his old form.

If the Leafs had used their amnesty buyout on Liles instead of Komisarek, they would be 39 games away from clearing both contracts.

@So_Truculent
Instead, they've got $4M of Carolina-washout Tim Gleason for 3 years

That first option seems so much better right now.  If Gleason can regain some form, great, and that would mitigate it - but the Leafs could have just allocated those funds elsewhere with a better use of the buyouts.

Well, you could also argue that they could have just played Liles from the get-go.  It's not like they have a bunch of guys back there who are head and shoulders above him.

Getting rid of both contracts is probably more valuable to the team right now, IMO.

To speculate, Komisarek might of brought personal issues to the team that the Leafs didn't want to see rubbing off on other players?  I honestly think when you're paid millions to be a Leaf, your name shouldn't be coming up on TMZ.

I'm with you there, unfortunately the cost was bringing in another bad contract.  But who knows, maybe Gleason will be serviceable.

Hard to say, I guess.

I think people are kidding themselves if they don't think that money played a role in deciding to buy out Komisarek, especially considering who else they bought out.

Time for Leafs to bust this out again.  I changed up the name for Leiweke.

Does anyone find it odd, or telling, or maybe it doesn't matter, that we haven't heard of one of those 'player only' meetings? Usually you would have heard about one of those by now...

I've been having the same thought since last week. Leadership needs to take control if indeed the players are having a difficult time with Carlyle. They need to have that meeting and plan how to rise to the occasion aside of any ill will towards the coach that may be going on and let the coach bury himself.

If they don't, it's equally their own fault in my opinion with the coach. They get paid a lot of money to play at a high level, that comes with this responsibility, no?

Jonas Siegel says Phaneuf, McClement and Lupul have been meeting regularly trying to figure it out as the leadership guys.

It might make a difference, but Leafs teams of 2009, 2010 etc had players only meetings that didn't really affect things.  But still, I wouldn't be surprised if we see/hear of one soon.

Well, that is encouraging, but I think Joe was referring to the Sundin closed door type meeting where the players go in as a team and come out sworn to secrecy of what went on in the room.

I know, I was just mentioning what has been going on in lieu of that thus far.

The quotes from the opposing players are telling. I think Nonis has to do something to reform the bottom 6 lines. The loss of Bolland was never really adequately addressed.

Why we haven't gotten rid of one of Orr, Fraser or McLaren is beyond me. Nonis has to see the flawed logic that having two face punchers on the roster is ludicrous. If he can't see this, maybe he needs to go also. I don't think Nonis is oblivious to this, but he can't sit on his hands any longer IMO.

Remember that time Orr was sent to the minors?  Meeeemories...

It was nice to have a coach that at least understood where the game was heading instead of being stuck in the past. It really really was.

I can kind of see the 13th player being this type, but having two take up cap space and roster spots is just blatantly asinine. I'm surprised that this error hasn't been rectified yet.

Also, if it wasn't known before last night that Fraser is no longer an NHL defenseman, it should most definitely be known now after his play in last night's game.

Orr has been outscored by multiple goaltenders in his career.  He doesn't even deserve a 13th forward role, he really doesn't.
