Yeah, it feels like a one-sided rumour: I'm sure Edmonton would like Phaneuf, but I don't see what's in it for the Leafs. I don't see a deal here.

They have some nice prospects, but, other than the guys who have already made their roster, they don't really have any centrepiece type prospects, and, outside of Yakupov, the roster players they'd likely be willing to move really don't make up for that.

Just one thing, though - if the Leafs were shopping Phaneuf, they wouldn't put it out to the media. In the early stages of things, that hurts their bargaining position. You don't want teams to believe you're actively looking to move the guy unless you desperately want to be rid of him. What they'd do is they'd contact teams that have significant pieces they're interested in and try to start a dialogue. Things might leak out to the media, but, not until the process has gotten underway or the team has informed the other 29 teams they're looking to move him. The whole "negotiate through the media" stuff is overblown.
Nik the Trik said:If Nonis is about my stealth rebuild there are trades that could jump start that process(although would be of terrible value for Edmonton). If, say, they wanted to deal one of Hall or Eberle or RNH and Justin Schultz or Nurse and then Kessel could be flipped to somewhere like Nashville for something like Seth Jones and Colin Wilson....I mean, none of those deals are fair deals for the non-Maple Leafs but you could talk me into them.

That sort of depends on how good you think Clarkson is.

You mean that he'll be productive at the end of the deal when the rebuilt is ready to compete? Or that Nonis is speeding the process by signing UFA busts?

It was mostly in jest, but Clarkson is what, 29? If you're rebuilding, you'd think he'd sign a core young guy to that kind of term. But, I suppose you could still be right, maybe.
