Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

More cart-before-the-horse management from the GM.  Letting the team get built in the image of the coach instead of building around the existing strengths.

I surely didn't like it, but I could at least understand why it was something Nonis did this summer -- Randy did make the playoffs, after all. Maybe it's working. But after a brutal 25 games that put the playoffs very much in doubt..?

Blargh.

The only saving grace really is if the Hurricanes hold some salary. They won't of course though.

Maybe Nonis will.  He's good at that.

So, the Canes have Komisarek and would rather him than Gleason

Komisarek is $3.3M less on the cap.

Ah, so bad contract for a bad contract. Or worse for bad. Plus a prospect?

How's Gleason rank these days next to, say, Ryan O'Byrne?

If it wasn't for the terrible contract that Gleason comes with, probably very comparably. Neither are particularly mobile or have much by way of offensive skills. Both are defence first guys that try to play a physical game and make too many mistakes to play big minutes.

TSNBobMcKenzie: CAR and TOR trying to get Tim Gleason trade call with league done in next 20 minutes.

DarrenDreger: Pending call. Gleason to Toronto for Liles and Robertson (d-man).

Sigh.

Guess I'm wondering: had Gleason's contract expired last summer, would he playing in the KHL now?

I said in the offseason that I thought O'Byrne was a better player than Fraser. If Gleason can come in and accomplish that small feat I'll be content. Still not a very good trade of course, especially depending on the prospect.

Maybe, though, I think his reputation might have earned him a ~$750K, 1 year deal.

6th round pick in 2011. Not really anything special, but he seemed to be progressing nicely for a late round draft pick.

Robertson was a 6th round pick by the Leafs in 2011 who has been playing in the NCAA. He's currently in his senior year. Doesn't seem like much of a loss, so, meh on that. But, the Leafs really shouldn't have had to add anything.

Gleason is only 30, should be able to play Carlyle hockey, and with the Leafs troubles in clearing the zone virtually all season, its certainly worth a try.

I don't mind this move at all, personally.

I guess this team just needs to carry a $4 million dollar defenseman in the AHL. Audis in the parking lot outside Ricoh give the kids something to aspire to?

Is Gleason taking minutes away from Ranger a terrible thing?

No. I mean, if this is the exact trade, it's not terrible, it just doesn't seem like the move that should have been made. A lot of it obviously depends on how Gleason is used and how much ice time he gets, but, it's not as bad a trade as I feared it would be. I just would have liked to see the team actually open up some cap space instead of adding more to their cap issue.

Ranger skates better and handles the puck better than Gleason. They are about the same size, and Ranger seems to be playing a little more physical since his stint in the pressbox.

So yeah, probably.

We traded a d-man that the coach did not like or trust for a d-man that the coach might like and trust.  Salaries are a wash so I don't really see any harm.  No other team wanted Liles or he would have been long gone.  It's under-performer for under-performer but each might fit new team better.
