Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

I'm surprised that most people dislike this trade...  We move a guy Carlyle obviously doesn't want and won't use for someone who could potentially be an upgrade over one of Ranger or Fraser.

Worst case, he's just a bit of extra salary ($125k) who also sits in the press box or minors.  Seems worth a shot, given the teams performance.

Is Gleason taking minutes away from Ranger a terrible thing?

Ranger skates better and handles the puck better than Gleason. They are about the same size, and Ranger seems to be playing a little more physical since his stint in the pressbox.

So yeah, probably.

Don't quite get this either. I thought Ranger has been playing quite well lately and has a size & speed advantage over Gleason.  It would be too bad to see him stapled to the press box again now.

The big problem is cap space being taken up by a 7th dman.

The cap space is a wash and we can buyout Gleason just as easy as Liles.  No money issues with this trade.

Buy-out information from LeafsNation:

                        Liles Buyout Gleason Buyout
2014-2015       $916,666.67 $833,333.33
2015-2016       $2,416,666.67 $1,833,333.33
2016-2017       $1,291,666.67 $1,333,333.33
2017-2018       $1,291,666.67 $1,333,333.33

Their numbers on Liles are wrong. According to capgeek, they should be this:

2014-15: $791,667
2015-16: $2,291,667
2016-17: $1,166,667
2017-18: $1,166,667

Completely agree, worst case scenario is what you said.  So much promise though for this to be a steal of a deal and if is doesn't so what.

I dont know much about Gleason anybody know if hes any good at pinching or holding the blueline in the offensive zone?

Also I have to say Ranger hasn't been making me cringe as much lately

I suppose the thinking is that realistically this is a swap of guys who are borderline NHL defensemen but that the Leafs are taking the bigger cap hit and throwing in the prospect.

I hate it that Carlyle is dictating roster decisions.

You'd rather it be left to the people who decided to hire the worst coach in hockey history?

Gleason is a borderline NHL player? His play must have dropped off pretty badly since he was selected to the US Olympic team in 2010.

Except Liles was taking up the same, less $125k.

It has. Carolina wouldn't be trading him for Liles if he hadn't.

He's been getting 15 minutes a night on a pretty mediocre defensive group.

Burke is in Calgary now. Nonis lobbied heavily for Eakins - not that he's necessarily looking like a better option, either.

Fine. "Continue employing" then.

Carolina has a spot for Komisarek but not Gleason. Something tells me we aren't going to be happy with this trade.

Carolina has a place for $700K Komisarek but not for $4 million Gleason.  Easy to see the difference.
