Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

I thought we could get more cap flexibility for Liles.

I think it's pretty safe to say that if we could have, we would have.
So why then do we have to give them a prospect as well.  The leafs are taking all the risk.

The Leafs were more desperate to get rid of Liles.

All we need now is to entice Keith Carney out of retirement and we could have the honeymooners on defense.

To the moon Alice! bang...zoom ;D

It's just weird.  I believe we gave up the best player in the deal (Liles) but we had to take on more cap hit and throw in a prospect to boot to get it done.  In the long run it won't matter but it feels like we got hosed???

Yes, because having a bunch of offensively minded, soft, puck moving dman is clearly working for the Leafs this season.  Gleason is a mobile, aggressive, defensive dman who has played on the international stage and has been a leader, nope we don't need a player like that.
It's hard to be mobile, and aggressive from the rehab ward.  He has missed a significant amount of injury time on 3 separate occasions this season.  Maybe he bounces back.  I thought we could get more cap flexibility for Liles.

Ok, lets not make the deal and lets put that cap hit on the Marlies or in the press box where Liles has been all season, you happy now.  Liles wasn't going anywhere without salary coming back.  Deal is a no brainer, worth the risk, geez lol.

No disrespect intended, but how many of those saying how terrible Gleason is have actually watched him play for any significant period?  Outside of when the Canes play the Leafs, I have not seen him.

Liles might not be in his prime anymore but he can still move the puck pretty well & wasn't really terrible when he was in the line-up. Was he too much of what we already have on this defense? Of course. With Gleason, you like the idea of acquiring a tough defencemen but like alot of the nonsense we see with Carlyle, what good is toughness if it doesn't come hand in hand with the talent? I get it, making trades isn't the easiest thing in the world & the Leafs aren't exactly dealing anything major in Liles. Still... I worry about this move being in the Orr, Fraser mold, which doesn't come close to solving the Leafs problems defensively.

Until you see the guy in the line-up, nobody knows for sure though. Could turn out that Gleason has more juice left than anyone thinks he does.

We're not getting Gleason in his prime unfortunately, as it's already been said. But he could still be a useful addition to the team.

I wonder how Kulemin feels about playing with him.

If I were Gleason, who's now a Leaf, I'd have Kulemin punch him to even it out.  (just joking)

Truthfully speaking, that was a pretty vicious one handed punch Gleason threw at Kuli, a player not known for fighting.

Can we at least give Gleason a few games before we declare him garbage. I saw Liles play and really the Leafs aren't missing what he brought.

I'm one to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he will bring to the defence.  Hopefully it'll be all positive.

Kind of blah really, not that it was going to turn out very differently for Toronto, Liles was going to be a problem no matter so just change the name for the most part.

I mean, unless there are issues we aren't aware of and Gleason is better than advertised.

It's actually a pretty good (and I'm not sure I like this term) 'hockey trade.' - Similar cap hits, two very different skill sets. I really don't think either team is taking much of a risk here.

I'd like to add, if Carlyle thinks Gleason can fill the roll of 6th defenseman AND face-puncher, perhaps a Frazer McLaren comes out for someone useful.

I don't know the prospect they lost, but does it add room on their limit of players they can protect?  As in they now could trade a draft pick for a player and have room for that player.

Didn't seem to work that way when Mark Fraser was in the lineup who drops them at a higher rate than Gleason ever does

Apparently this has been a rumor since.... November?

Late to the party folks and I am trying to wrap my head around this trade.

I haven't had chance to read all the posts here but I HATE this trade on 2 fronts.  Cost and term.

He is the 2nd highest dman on the Leafs only behind Phaneuf but I expect people think he is a 6th dman to replace the lowly Fraser and the $1 MIL Ranger experiment.  That is a pathetic amount of money to pay for a 6th dman. Add to that...this contract isn't up this summer but drags out (I prefer to say 'vomits over') the next 2 years.

Since this season Liles didn't fit under the cap and even Franson chose to take less so that he could fit under the puny amount that Nonis left available under the cap, Gleason as the 2nd highest paid dman on the Leafs only fits today because of the Leaf LITR players.  The geniuses in Leafs management must be hoping Bolland is out for a long, long time because if Bolland returned tomorrow the Leafs wouldn't fit under the cap by approximately $1,059,167 if my guess is close at 195 days into the season.

Since:
Gunnarsson / Phaneuf
Gardiner / Franson
Rielly / Ranger

...were doing OK. I am not sure which one should be sat with Nonis INCREASING the roster salary.  I don't see why Gleason was brought in at all.  He isn't a game changer in any way shape or form.  If Liles wasn't able to be moved for a draft pick then I figured he should have been simply brought out this summer.

On top of that, if the Leafs management wanted Gleason, who hasn't scored in 2 years(!!), to be just a tough player then they should have given Andrew MacWilliam a shot since he is bigger, younger and a WHOPPING $3.125 MIL cheaper per year.

This is worse then a sideways move, this is a step back.  I would love to hear Nonis' explanation of this move because it makes no sense to me on any level.

Talk me off the bridge guys!  I see that Leafs got out from under a bad contract by taking on a worse one with a player that the Leafs didn't need.

Nothing against Gleason, I just don't like the trade and have tried to convey that in this post.

McLaren hasn't played since December 16th.  Carlyle also had no problem playing lineups with Orr + McLaren + Fraser.  The only thing this will do is make the lineup:

Phaneuf - Gunnarsson
Franson - Gardiner
Rielly - Gleason

And my guess is that Rielly becomes the scape-goat if someone gets pulled from the lineup.
