Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

This is akin to when you see a hot blonde at the bar and you're so focused on what you're going to say to her that you end up hitting on the guy next to her instead.

Scrivens was clearly the sharper goalie at camp; he's played 47 games, including 4 in the NHL, since Reimer last played 302 days ago

One novel idea I'd like to see implemented: When the goaltending is shaky or losing confidence, play a more defensive game.

I'm still waiting for you to call, by the way.

You know, these leadership opinions we have are really just outliers' opinions...we really don't know the leadership capabilities, nor the personality types of these guys.  We don't even really know the dressing room dynamic of these teams.

...alright?

I'm just sayin'...leadership qualities aren't really something that we can quantify here, and it's difficult to form a proper argument one way or another without knowing the players.

No, I gotcha, I suppose I just didn't see how it connected to the goaltending conundrum. Unless, I mean, are you talking about Carlyle?

I'm guessing he meant that for the Alternate Captains thread.

Seriously, Frank, pay attention. Get your head out of your arse.

Damn it.  I'm screwing up all over the place here.

That happens to you too?

By all accounts, Scrivens has outplayed Reimer in the abbreviated camp.  Arguably, he deserves to start on that basis alone.

Carlyle probably knows better than most as to who might be the better goaltender.

It is refreshing, IMHO,  that the Leafs have not 'annointed' a #1 goaltender this year as they have done previously, since it always seemed to backfire on them  (i.e.  Giguere,  Toskala,  Raycroft,  Reimer, etc. etc.).  Moreover, given Reimer's performance last year, he doesn't deserve to be the #1 goaltender.  i.e.  39th overall in save percentage at .900;  and 41st overall in GAA at 3.10.    And, I know that the whole concussion/neck whiplash injury has been debated at length last year but there hasn't been much that Reimer has really demonstrated over the past year that makes one think that he has a terrific glove hand,  or has really terrific reflexes, or quick pads.

I'm not suggesting that Scrivens deserves to be #1 on this team, but given the options, whoever is the best goaltender deserves to play the majority of the games, irrespective of perceptions, and hurt feelings, and lack of development, etc. etc.

Hopefully Reimer will play like he did a couple of years ago, especially in playing so tough, in tight.  But  there isn't anything in his game so far, or his demonstrated ability over the past year which makes it readily apparent, unfortunately.

Refreshing agreed, a real message is being sent with all the decisions on Lombardi, Connolly, Frattin, Rielly, various AHL'ers and now Scrivens. Play up to snuf and play consistently, or you won't be playing. Carlyle just has to keep the peddle to the metal with his crew. I think he will.

Watched the game in an hour again this morning as I do some editing at my desk. Reimer let in a few weak goals against the Pens, but he also looked tremendous at times. Since it was his first game in like 200 days, I'll give him the benefit of doubt that he can clean up his game a bit still.

This has to be great news for Leafs Nation. Erratic goaltending is what caused the fall from grace last year after Reimer got hurt. And he didnt look the same when he returned either. Can we finally have an answer to the goaltending conundrum? ;)

This is the sort of conundrum I enjoy.  So far both goalies have been solid, nothing really to complain about.  Sure Reimer may have wanted at least 1 of those 2 goals back last night, but he was solid at other times in the game.  Neither goalie has cost the Leafs a game so far, and that's all you can ask for.  Once the Leafs took the 3-2 lead, Reimer settled in.

So the conundrum is back right?
For now.  I am hopeful that Reimer will regain his form.

The form he had for a couple of months one year?

I don't really get the high expectations with him.  It's fine to be hopeful I guess, and he may be the best we have right now, but I can't see any reason to believe he'll be very good.

yes, for now he's the best we've got. I would much rather have him than trade away our prospects for Luongo.

Better than Scrivens?? How so?  If your referring to the let down game on Long Island, a game that he looked solid in for the first half and then the whole team packed it in for the second half then please don't.  Leaf exhaustion, crazy travel, alternating home and away dates, bad bounces, a young team coming  back down to earth whatever it is, I don't get my panties in a knot for that isolated performance.  Let's see how it all unfolds from here on out.  I still send Scrivens out for the bulk of the games at this point in the season.  Reimer has to earn my trust back and I ease him into the picture, much like RC has done and hopefully will continue to do.

No offense, but have you watched the two goalies this year?Scrivens looked bad last game. So did the team, but once he let a few bad ones in, the team just deflated. Reimer looked pretty good for the most part against Pittsburgh. Tonight should be the litmus test for James. I'm pulling for him. Scrivens has already lost my support. Maybe he can turn it around, but I'm not counting on it. At this point I'd like to see Rynnas come up for a shot at backup.

My gut tells me that Rynnas will be our goal tender of the future...then again my gut tells me that pork is not good for me. ;D

I don't know how you blame Scrivens for the team being weak mentally.
