Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

While Reimer is still an RFA, he might not be so easy to sign this offseason.  I get the sense he's quite displeased with how things have gone and, honestly, I don't blame him.

I don't know. Reimer doesn't strike me as that kind of guy, and, with the very very real possibility that Randy Carlyle won't be behind the bench anymore, the focal point of his displeasure won't be an issue.

He still has to perform to get the money, which to this point, I don't think he gets more than Bernier. Maybe he gets the same contract, but he'd have to go on quite a run, starting tonight, to justify getting a contract better than Bernier IMO.

Yup, also as an RFA he has no leverage.  What's he going to do sit out?  Have another team offer sheet him?  That rarely if ever happens nowadays.  So he's pretty much stuck with the Leafs for another contract, unless he's traded.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this happens. It's very rare for a goalie to be in Reimer's position, but if someone like him became available I think GMs would seriously consider going the offer sheet route. Edmonton definitely.

While I like Reimer if the offer was right I wold move him now..I think with expereience Bernier will end up the better of the two. Just an opinion

I am wondering if Reimers excellent play in COL, will get him some more starts? I hope he gets the game in WIN.

Yeah I still don't see how this became a 80/20 split of late (3 starts in the last 13). The Rangers game when he came in, the team didn't show up, the Carolina game was even worse IMO, and he played decently against Buffalo fighting for the SO win.

Looked good last night too. As I stated before, I think he's more valuable to the team as a trade piece for a player who'll play every night leading into the playoffs, than as a goalie who will play every 4th game/come in during blowouts to mop up.

I love Reimer but his stats have been on a steady decline over the year while Bernier has been a little more consistent.  I think a lot of it has to do with how Carlyle has used him (sparingly and then thrown him against tough competition a number of times) and that he doesn't get the benefit of trying to battle through games where he gave up goals early, but his numbers haven't stayed stellar all year.

Oct - .949 SV%
Nov- .916 SV%
Dec- .909 SV%
Jan - .893 SV%

Versus Bernier's .933, .922, .932, .916

I don't think the split should be 80/20, but Bernier has separated him self from Reimer by a bit this year.

if we trade him, and we do make the playoffs, who's the backup.

Ok, Got it. That is all.

If Carlyle and the team get the SA/G under control, then we can talk trades.  Until then, no goalie should have to face a league-worst 36.4 shots against per game alone.  It's inhumane.

Fix the SA/G, or deal with the tandem.  Until they figure out how to build some sort of cyborg robo-goalie, those are the options.

Speaking of cyborgs, maybe we can get this "Tal-Bot" that Joe Bowen kept referring to last night.

Scrivens was just moved for a 3rd and Dubnyk for a scrub so....

A backup goalie is exactly that. Most teams don't employ 2 #1's because it's a waste of cap space/talent distribution.

Notable backup goalies (potential playoff teams):

Boston: Chad Johnson
Col: Giguere
Montreal: Budaj
NYR: Talbot
Phoenix: Greiss
Pitts: Zatkoff
SJ: Stalock
Min: Backstrom
Stl: Elliot
TB: Lindback
Van: Lack
Ana: Andersen
Chi: Raanta
Dal: Dan Ellis
Ott: Lehner
Wpg: Inigo Montoya

I'm not sure about you, but I don't look at most of those teams and think "Well if the starter goes down they'll be fine!" and in the cases where I do think that, the team is probably good enough to overcome the goaltending deficiencies with good D and great offence.

To judge by the points in the MotM thread, Reimer's play is just about at the same level as Bernier's.

RC & Co. may have anointed Bernier, but I don't think either one has established #1 status decisively.

Im guessing some of that has to do with the Reimer love and maybe the non Bernier love for some. I have seen some games where Berneir stood on his head and some did not have him with either accolade. Just an observation..I just want them both to excel. Don't much care which one it is

Or you could just go by actual, unbiased stats, which L K pointed out a few posts above, that show Bernier's play has been at a higher level than Reimer's.

I hope he gets the start in Winnipeg, I'll be at the game and then at the game in Tdot Tuesday, which I think Bernier will start vs the Lightning.
