Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

Reimer gets the start on Saturday, according to a Bernier interview (with Siegel?) today.

Another opportunity he needs to take advantage of. He hasn't really been doing that much as of late.

He was pretty great his last start.

Watch out for all the non-existent sarcastic comments though (except this one, it exists).

Yep, that's why I said "hasn't been doing that much" instead of "at all".

I hope he plays a great game, Reimer's awesome.

So much for that.

Reimer was bad last night, there is no denying that.  He left his 5-hole open way too much.  He was slow to react to the play tonight.  The team in front of him was brutal too but Reimer didn't help himself out at all.  Bernier came in and was solid but I really didn't feel like he got tested horribly either.

It certainly didn't feel like Winnipeg was getting the type of chances against Bernier that they did against Reimer. There wasn't as much traffic in front and they weren't getting around the defence as much. The only half decent scoring chance I can remember Bernier facing is the one that went in.

I'm exhausted and, as a goaltender, pretty upset that it has been allowed to continue this way. The point was made a long time ago that the Leafs did not need Bernier, because we already had him in Reimer. Statistically, that is a pretty fair claim (all credit to whoever).

But Bernier is here. I'd be much happier with Scrivens and Bernier, but the fact is that the only thing separating Bernier from Reimer is the absolute "eff off" vote Reimer has received from the coach and/or management. He has been the goat since the playoff exit, when i would probably be first to criticize Carlyle. Now i know it's unusual to move two nhl-caliber goalies in the same summer from the same team, but Reimer has always been the kind of guy to do better with the vote, than to have to earn it back. Did anyone expect that Reimer would raise his trade value from season's opener until the trade deadline, knowing full well that the job had been pretty much gifted to an unproven, statistical clone of himself? No chance.

And if Scrivens is worth a 3rd-rounder to Los Angeles, is there any good reason that Reimer should be forced to suffer this season, knowing he has no confidence from his superiors, while his Bizarro, slightly more composed-looking Self is given every chance that he had in his first season?

This is cannibalism, and there is no good reason for it to continue. Reimer for a song, and we should all wish him well. He's done a lot for this club, notwithstanding his eternally good nature.

Interesting point from Greg Brady this morning:

Greg Brady ‏@bradyfan590 1h
SHOW TOPIC: The next 13 games the Leafs play don't involve back-to-backs. So realistically, how often will Reimer play over that stretch?

Brady got it a bit wrong. The next 11 the Leafs play don't involve back-to-backs. Then they play Anaheim and San Jose on March 10th and 11th. So that's 6 games before the break, and the first 5 games after the break. I would imagine Reimer gets 1 game in each of those segments.

Bernier does seem to struggle a little if he doesn't get a break after 3 or 4 games, and I think the coaching staff has recognized that. Unless Bernier's virtually unbeatable, Reimer will almost certainly get one start before the break. He'll likely get one shortly after, as well, as I doubt the team will want to throw Bernier out there without a break after not having faced a shot in almost three weeks.

I don't think much has changed.  Reimer had a pretty awful start last game, so it's Bernier's turn.  So long as he's hot, he starts.  If he screws up, it's Reimer's shot again.  They split back-to-backs.

Maybe its us fans and the media that is distracting both goalies.  I imagine it would be very difficult to be playing when every save or non-save is scrutinized, when debate occurs deciding who should be starting, who should get traded, what should come back our way if a goalie is traded, and who should be benched.

I know we expect the best out of the players, but as fans we should be supporting the players even during their slumps because the criticism just makes things worse for the players.

Yes, I am fully aware of the $$$ the players make and pressure comes with the territory, but at the end of the day, Reimer and Bernier are both human and will be prone to making mistakes.  They still need our support.

I agree.  Carey Price seems to handle it pretty well and he's in a horrific market in terms of scrutiny.

I really couldn't give a rats behind what the media thinks, says or prints and most players would probably feel the same way.  But as fans of our team and our players, we have an obligation to support our players and not run them out of town.  We have become so accustomed to having lineups of crappy players that some of us may have forgot who we are as Leaf fans.  I remember 11 years ago and before that if someone trash talked one of the Leaf players whether in conversation or online, we would be all over that person.  We need to get that attitude back.

Yeah, that's a nice thought and all, but fans of teams(in every sport) have been complaining about players since the beginning of time. It's not a 'new' thing for Toronto fans to complain about the players the Leafs ice.

I also don't think the players give a rats rearend about what you, or I, or any fan thinks. They can't. It's their job not to. Like I said, if you can't take the scrutiny, you have no place being a goalie or for that matter, an NHL player.

Yeah I don't buy the whole "fans and media" excuse with players.  Unless a player is getting constantly booed at home every time he touches the puck (like Larry Murphy), how much of an effect would negative comments in call in shows or message boards have on them?  I doubt players log in to websites and read what the fans are saying about them.  The player would be more affected by what his coach or GM is telling him behind closed doors.  That's where the real pressure comes from.

Well we are Leaf fans and we are supposed to be different than other fans.  I remember when polls were taken that Leaf fans were rated the most supportive of their NHL hockey team and overall 2nd or 3rd in terms of all major league sports in North America, but other polls suggest Toronto is one of the worst sports cities in North America.

Back in '93 when the Wings dominated the Leafs in the first two games in Detroit and everyone was saying the series would be done in 4 or 5 games.  But the Leafs came back and won the next two in Toronto and the series in 7 thanks to the huge support of the fans.  So we can continue to throw bullets at players or we can go back to our roots and throw them our support.

The fans didn't make the Leafs come back in that 93 series against Detroit the same way the fans didn't make them lose game 7 at home against the Kings.  Fan support was crazy back then, the team won and lost on their own.
