Seguin's replacement in Boston. [throws up a little.]

Seguin was a winger in Boston, and they're getting his replacement in the trade.

Ah, well, point still stands. I hope he doesn't go to a rival. - I still want to be able to hope he does well.

I dunno. If this just leads to a Bozak signing, Grabbo ending up in Detroit might help speed the end of Nonis -- which would be a necessary thing if his off-season priorities turn out to be signing Bozak, Clarkson, and Orr.

It's not even like Clarkson is a sure thing either, he was visiting a potential destination in Ottawa yesterday...

As a cash saving exercise for the Leafs, I can't see that being the case as they just spent $15 mil to send Grabbo packing.

Sure, but you and I both know that 15 million over 8 years is less expensive than 15 million dollars today.

All pennies to MLSE man.. pennies.

Thinking it's got to be signing though. If it were a trade -- Couturier? Stastny? Who else has an extra center? -- I'd think it would've been completed before the buyout was begun. Otherwise, if I were the other GM, my price just went up.

Nonis is generally a conservative guy and I would think he would have his trade lined up and good to go before pulling this buy out, or at least have the deal to a point where he would make it.

Could they change the price on him? Maybe, but most of these GM's don't play down to the level of carnival prize game with each other.

This does seem to me like a very bad move. Curious to see what the plan is, but, even then, giving away good players for nothing just isn't something good teams do.

Fixed it.

And now it looks truly awful.

Umm, isn't cap room 'something'?

Is there any reason to suspect that it won't be?

No, but that doesn't mean it will be. The Leafs could conceivably strike out with every prominent UFA and find themselves with ~$6M in cap space going into the season. Until they actually use it, having it is pretty immaterial. I mean, the Islanders have a tone of cap space right now, but, everyone knows they're not going to use it, so, it's pretty worthless.

I'm surprised there wasn't a trade available, to be honest.  Something doesn't add up: there were no takers across the league for Grabovski at $5.5M, yet some are convinced the amounts to sign Clarkson, Bozak, Weiss, et all will be highly inflated.

I'm of the opinion that the Leafs are going to upgrade at centre in the next little while.  In the end, this will come across as Grabovski for (upgraded player) XY with MLSE ponying up a boatlaod of money to make it happen.

But what upgrade do you think is out there? I could two FAs. And I don't know of any upgrades being available by trade.

I think I'll plan on being annoyed if he didn't have a plan and bought out Grabbo anyway. I may even break something.

Look, what do I know.  But as I see it Nonis only makes this move if there's something definitive and better in place.  I still think Grabovski had value on the trade market - diminished, sure, but not zero.  This looks like a timing issue and the only reason you lose Grabovski for 'nothing' is that something better is coming in.

Respectfully, that is an unreasonable thing to base an opinion on.  I'm not concerned that you don't know what is available, but I can assure you Nonis - and his management team - does.

That's certainly my hope, but, until we know what that is . . .
