As a cash saving exercise for the Leafs, I can't see that being the case as they just spent $15 mil to send Grabbo packing.

Sure, but you and I both know that 15 million over 8 years is less expensive than 15 million dollars today.

Sure it is. But much of that $15 mil over 8 years is over and above the cap dough they're likely to spend on top of that - which overwhelms the interest on $15 mil "today" ("today" = over the 4 years left on the contract).

They'll just double their hotdog prices.

Which seems just as risky as going with Grabbo, Kadri, Colburne, and McClement.

I didn't say it was the smartest decision in the world. Just one that I wouldn't be surprised to see this organization make.

And it doesn't sound plausible that they'd go with what they've got and save the cash. Isn't the new ownership serious about winning, bringing in Lieweke and all?

I've heard this team and it's various ownership groups say they were "serious" about winning for a very long time now. It hasn't stopped any of them from making it a pretty clear #2 on their priority list.

The timing isn't weird given that today was the last day they could place a player on waivers for purposes of compliance buyout.  They tried to trade him and couldn't so this was the only recourse.

Yeah, I had mentioned this yesterday, although I was a day early on it. I thought the buyout period ended today.

I agree with Nik though, it wouldn't have taken this long to figure out the trade possibilities for him, so I think it was Nonis solidifying another deal for a new player, whoever that will be. I don't think he could have bought out Grabbo, without another plan in place, he would have been booed out of Toronto on a rail.

I'm anxious to find out what Nonis will do.  I refuse to believe this money was freed up for Bozak, if that's the case I'll eat my hat.  There has to be a trade in the works.

They could do that one way or the other. It still won't "save them money"

And if they do spend that cap dough than that would indicate that saving money wasn't the reason for this decision. If they don't, I'm just saying that you wouldn't be able to knock me over with a feather.

Ha. Fair enough. But do you really see the Leafs hovering $5.5m below the cap? I get MLSE is a money-making venture, but there is an agreement that the team spends a ton on the roster and the fans, no matter how good that roster is, will pay a ton more to see them. Getting cheap wouldn't look very good at all...

Anyhow, no one's looked at the buyout from Grabbo's POV yet. He's now... what? 2nd or 3rd best UFA center available? Ribero, Weiss... then him, no?

I agree, but I'm also biting my nails a bit.

Well, they don't need to be that far below the cap for this to save them some cash but do I think they could justify it? Sure.

Well, I suppose that's going to depend on how teams see the season he just had and where he's likely to go going forward.

Their new owners want the broadcasting dough. Not only does spending on the roster help the Leafs franchise - it's leveraged by helping the product their owners are broadcasting. They'll spend close to the cap.

Given that Nonis's answer to every roster question has been "if there's a player that we can add that's going to be an upgrade at the right price, we're going to do it," it must be a new center coming in -- unless Nonis's said those words thousands of times without bothering to look up what "upgrade," "right," and "price" mean.

Grabbo will do very well for himself somewhere.

I think so as well. I'll bet a few teams that were chatting with Bozak's agent have called Grabbo's agent. He's very probably in the top five UFA centers available.

I just meant that you never know what's going on until it's done. I don't really think Nonis is going to do all this to sign Bozak and if he does, I've totally misjudged him in every way.

Thinking it's got to be signing though. If it were a trade -- Couturier? Stastny? Who else has an extra center? -- I'd think it would've been completed before the buyout was begun. Otherwise, if I were the other GM, my price just went up.

I don't know enough about the actual ratings numbers to know if that's true. Rogers/Bell, for instance, don't see an actual spike in broadcasting revenue if the team makes the playoffs because the CBC has those games.

But, again, I just think it's an option on the table.

You're right and the broadcast rights would still go up for the regular season for a successful (playoff) team - plus mechandising etc. MLSE has
a million ways to soak Leaf fans....

Seguin's replacement in Boston. [throws up a little.]

Seguin was a winger in Boston, and they're getting his replacement in the trade.

Ah, well, point still stands. I hope he doesn't go to a rival. - I still want to be able to hope he does well.

Good point, you're probably right. I have my Stastny blinders on.
