Grabovski Bought Out

I don't know why some in the media are making this a Bozak vs. Grabovski debate.  There's no guarantee this buyout was to only sign Bozak.  This buyout has all to do with the money Grabovski was being paid and his role on the team.

Agreed 100%.

hmm, can't say that I like losing Grabbo, I just hope that this doesn't mean that Bozak gets a crazy contract...

I can't see it.  Nonis has to be realistic with Bozak's stats and value.  If anything this buyout shows that Nonis isn't afraid to hold the line and won't have a large salary on the team that doesn't produce.

Grabovski had 52 goals and 109 points in two seasons prior to 2013. Bozak had 33 and 79. Hard to argue Grabovski isn't the better player.

So, basically, if you ignore Grabovski's career worst year and focus on two good ones, whereas you ignore one of Bozak's good years and include his career worst year Grabovski has better stats?

DERP, YOU STUPID NONIS!

I think a lot of people just prefer to base things off of non-lockout shortened seasons. By all means add the 2013 seasons in your derp-Fest.

Yes. Thank you.

It's amazing how much tunnel vision these guys in the media have.. you know, this and the Ovechkin All star thing really shows off their brilliance.

Some want to give him another year and if he sucks again, then buy him out.

What if he sucks, gets injured and is ineligible for a buyout?

I glad he's getting bought out....He's not the long term solution for our team.I feel he's also getting more fragile ,will be less able to play a chippy abrasive game that he dispayed in the past ,despite his size..thanks Grabbo ,see you on some other team.

Now... if Bozak can be signed for a reasonable amount does that make people happy ?

Cuz if that happens then it's just Bolland replacing Grabbo as the shutdown center.

Sure. Grabo, over the course of his career, averages 48 points per 82 games. Bozak, over the course of his career, averages 46 points per 82 games. Grabo averages 21 goals per 82 games, Bozak averages 18 goals per 82 games. Grabo has played with worse linemates, Bozak is better on the draw. I might give a small edge to Grabo defensively, Bozak is almost 2 full years younger.

So, no, I don't see it as super hard to argue either one over the other.

Then you put him on the shelf, enjoy the LTIR and buy him out when he's healthy?

Except I'm pretty sure that the compliance buyouts can only be used this summer or next. If he's not eligible next summer, you're stuck.

Doesn't that assume he is on LTIR for the remaining life of the contract?

I don't love it, but I can understand why it happened. I just hope Nonis has something better than an overpaid Bozak up his sleeve. Got rid of one overpaid center, please don't replace him with another.

Wouldn't be a compliance buyout and you have a cap charge.

He's also 27, and has but two full NHL seasons to his name. That isn't exactly a pedigree I'd want to move forward with.

Really, really hoping there's a real upgrade a C coming.

But if this clears a roster spot to bring Bozak back at, say, $4m, the Leafs come out $1.5m ahead on the cap and get to their real needs -- a top 4 defenseman, another depth forward, and someone for the 2nd line RW -- wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

But if this move is really just to make room for Bozak's and Clarkson's cap hits and terms... this team won't make the playoffs. And it won't deserve to have.

You're right it's not hard. I'm taking the bought out guy averaging .61 ppg as a Leaf playing with worse linemates over the guy scoring at .56 ppg as a Leaf.  Maybe Bozak will get there one day with Crosby or something

Teams were able to start talking to free agents as of midnight last night or something right? So maybe they've got a deal with someone in principle and let Grabo go to make room.

Not that GMs speak plainly, but Nonis did sound like he was going to be keeping Grabo after talking about him having to earn minutes.

My bet is Weiss is coming to town.

Good evening chaps. It's been a splendid day on our spiffing island with summer looking like it has finally arrived so I am in a good mood.

I will however be extremely miffed if this means Bozak stays, so like many I am wondering if a bumper trade or FA signing is coming.

But could this also be so that Kessel can be signed to a new contract, and the Grabbo buyout pays for that too as well as part paying towards a new player?

Or, they now have the room to sign all their RFA's and also have room to put Stastny's 6.6 million on the team.
