Idiocracy 2024

I think it's pretty clear that Trump's ego was hurt when Trudeau wasn't nice to him in his last term.

He's a small pathetic man.

I know there’s no such thing as logic anymore, and I know these tariffs are a bullying tactic, but I still don’t understand what Trump actually wants. I just don’t understand the reality we are living in anymore. It’s complete nonsense.

Trump has also said the tariffs are to punish Canada for being lax on drugs and migrants even as the U.S. government's figures show less than one per cent of fentanyl and illegal migrants are coming from this country.

Figures from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) show the agency seized just 19.5 kilogramsof fentanyl at the northern border last year, compared to a whopping 9,570 kilograms at the southwestern one.

CBP data shows the number of people sneaking over the border into the U.S. last year was 24,000, a drop in the bucket compared to the surge coming in from Mexico.

It’s posturing to pressure Canada into becoming part of America, because we have a wealth of natural resources, trade route access (see Greenland, Panama Canal threats), and space they’d rather not spend on. Not much different than the precursor to what Russia has been trying to do with Ukraine (and other regions), and Israel with Palestine. Create an environment economically and through social engineering (botfarms, media shills) that makes the public consider annexation and subsumption as a beneficial outcome.

And it’s not really Trump saying it. He’s just the mouthpiece and signatory.

I think the Fentanyl crisis is all a bunch of BS. He's got bigger things in mind and this is the first step and the fentanyl issue and illegal immigration are an excuse. From what we seen the first 2 weeks of him getting re-elected with his cronies is mind boggling. Everyone is scared of his tactics and it's all about MAGA and fuk the rest of the world. People that voted for him are all imbeciles.

He wants to make Canada the 51st state by economic means, plain and simple. Makes me laugh when people say oh well he's just joking or he won't go that far etc. So far he's been pretty transparent with what he wants, so I'm definitely not giving any benefit of the doubt that this is just bluster. He's surrounded by Project 2025 people and lackeys and is purging government agencies of anyone who opposed him with no real checks and balances this time, so even an appeal to how he acted in his first term is pointless.

At least Mussolini made the trains run on time. In this case everyone will feel the pain of a trade war.

Let's be abundantly clear. This is 2025. The US has declared war on Canada. We are at war with them.

You are either on the side of the US or or Canada but we are at fucking war. You don't go to war with your friend. We are not friends. We are not ally's at this point. Trudeau's speech was actually quite poignant highlighting what we used to be.

I love that my own provincial CONSERVATIVE government is stepping up to take some actions locally as well.

Find someway to make up the difference on the Energy. New charge, flat out price hike, I don't care.

This is very likely to have a direct impact on me and my livelihood(like most of us in here). I'm in supply chain so I see how much daily this is going to cost my company. A 25% increase is going to make business almost prohibitive for some of our Customers, one of which we have been serving since W. was in office.

Fuck Donald Trump and everyone of his Canadian apologists. I hope every single one of you loses your job. I don't care anymore.

I wish he had a chance now. I'm not sad to see JT move on, but if he was re-elected and it trolled the hell out of Trump I'd be ok with that.

I wonder if it would have just been better to let Trump have his rope. I intend to avoid buying American, but some of the govt retaliations may backfire.

I'm no political guy, and with that being said I have no use for Trudeau, but whatever side you're on, I like seeing the cohesiveness of the parties at both levels of government to fight back. Nice to see some bite from both guys.

Refreshing to see some governing being done than just the typical mud-slinging back and forth.

Honestly I can’t help but laugh at this asinine ‘treated us fairly’ narrative. Trade has never been in Canada’s favour. Ever.

Do they even know what "Treating us fairly" even means? It's an amorphous term with no clear definition, just another moronic talking point.
NAFTA and the USMCA were signed because they generally were a benefit to both countries. If Canada were taking advantage of the US the US never would've signed it either time.

And either way if there were a legitimate grievance with Canada there'd be actual defined issues with clear goals in mind and they literally do not exist. The only two things this is actually about are: a: economic blackmail in order to control Canada economically and b: a bizarre preoccupation with a specific type of trade deficit which Trump considers a subsidy, which also is not based on reality.
