Jays Roster Discussion

Here?s the lowdown on Anthony Kay:

According to Yahoo Sports, Kay was the Mets? top-ranked pitching prospect. The 24-year-old was a 2016 first-round pick who fires a fastball that usually shoots in the 92-94 mph range and is known to throw a dynamite curveball.

Kay is also a Tommy John surgery survivor. A surgical procedure in which a healthy tendon is extracted from an arm or a leg and is used to replace an arm's torn ligament.

Yeah, so right now, big question mark.

I will admit that I?ve been somewhat disconnected from the team, I don?t watch many games, but ind read every box score, many articles and I listen to a fair share of sports radio.

With that being said, can someone explain to me why Biggio is being heralded as some kind of superior hitter at the plate? What am I missing? A .217 average is more than it appears?

He's good at getting on base, has speed and some power. That adds up right now to a 1.2 oWAR in 55 games which, over a full season, adds up to a pretty good ballplayer even if the batting average doesn't increase.

Average is just a bad stat IMO.

It ignores nearly 20% of his plate appearances which all had positive outcomes.

Thanks to both of you. I really need to get off my ass and get a better understanding of advanced batting stats

Gotta remember the Cavan is Bo's bro and Vlad the Impailers best buddy.

You 100% do not have to remember that. He can be judged on his own merits and he's doing fine.

So Sanchez and Biagini were part of a combined no hitter for Houston.

Thank you Atkins. Great trade.

Don't forget our part of the deal, Derek Fisher getting smashed in the face whiffing on catching a fly ball...literally insult to injury.  :P

I?m not a sky is falling kind of person or a management basher, but I?m having a real hard time getting behind any of the moves that this Atkins and Shapiro make.

Oh and Sogard hit 2 HRs today. I mean I don?t care about losing Sogard, but that?s just hilarious.

Sanchez was literally the worst starting pitcher in Baseball this year. It's great that he pitched well tonight and maybe the trade helps him sort some stuff out but if three years of waiting for Sanchez to return to form in a Jays uniform weren't enough how long should the team have waited while he was a replacement level pitcher? 8 years? Ten?

Fisher smashing his face on a routine fly combined with all this, yea, it's actually pretty sad/funny. It's just the way things go sometimes.

People were angry when Dwight Smith Jr lit it up briefly in Baltimore this year. He's now back to being a nobody.

These guys know how to evaluate talent; just look at their work in the draft and the international FA market. Bichette, Gurriel and Biggio are already big parts of the team and none was a 1st round pick.

Let's wait and see how Fisher turns out. I mean Stroman got pulled after 4 and 1/3 innings, is that now a better trade for us? There's a lot of hyperbole and overreaction right now and I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense.

Joe S. said:
I don?t deny any of that. My point is why trade him now? Anyway. I?ve said this already.

You trade him now because at some point, and three years seems like a fair point, it makes more sense to be giving those innings to just about anyone else in the hopes that you can develop them.

One of the things that the current management team has done consistently is try to find places for guys elsewhere if it's not working out here. Could the Jays have maybe gotten a slightly better return by trotting Sanchez out there start after start in the slim chance he gets better next year? Or demoting him to the bullpen in the hopes that he does better there? Maybe. But there was a tiny chance of the first and the latter was more likely to hurt Sanchez's career.

If he wants to make a go of it as a starter and another team maybe wants to take a crack at fixing him, it's a good thing to try and give Sanchez that opportunity rather than continue to hurt the team in the off chance that slightly increased performance means that next year they can get a C level prospect instead of whatever Fisher is.

Some good news here.  According to MLB Pipeline prospect rankings, the Jays P Nate Pearson is at #14 (of the 100 prospects listed for this year).

Toronto?s first round draft pick (2018j Jordan Groshans is at #73.

Derek Fisher with a ?facial contusion?.  He ran mighty fast to catch that flyball.  Too bad he missed it.

Maybe he should wear his glove on his face
