Saying "Sometimes you just need your goalie to make a save" is a correct statement. What isn't correct is "Sometimes you need your goalie to make all the saves possible regardless what happens before the goal goes in". That's an unrealistic expectation that will always leave fans feeling that the tender is letting them down. I agree that goalies need to steal games once and a while. But, when they don't, that doesn't mean the loss was their fault.

Thank you for putting this so clearly.

Obviously Travis Boyd isn't a guy who makes or breaks a lineup but what am I missing with him that he hasn't had a longer opportunity in the NHL.

He's 27 and he has 39 points in 103 NHL games.  Not earth shattering numbers but he's doing it with 3rd/4th line minutes.
Over the last parts of two seasons he has 18 points in 42 games (35 point pace)
He's seems to work hard on the ice.  How did he not get a better opportunity to stick in the NHL.

My read on his time with the Capitals is that he probably mostly got his minutes when an injury created an open spot somewhere in the top-9, and like you said he produced pretty well there. But when fully healthy he got bumped off the 3rd line and the team decided to stick with a more grindy 4th line composed of guys like Dowd/Hathaway/Leipsic/Hagelin.

I really like him. I think he's a guy that can take a spot on the fourth line and easily move onto the 3rd line if needed. He's not flashy but does what he has to do. Seems to have a great attitude and a fantastic work ethic.

Oh well our gain.

While I'm thinking of good bottom 6 players, let's bring Daniel Winnik back.  He still playing over in Switzerland.  I miss getting 2nd round picks out of him.

Holl surprised me for the first part of the season, he was playing very good hockey.  Now it seems he lost his mojo, outside of the Edmonton series (where it appeared all hands were on deck and ready).  If he continues to play like this I would rather see Liljegren in there.  And a few more games for Lehtonen in place of Dermott.

Or Sandin for Travis.  I would like to see Liljegren get some time too.

In retrospect, I wonder how much the Andersen animosity comes from seeing him in that Playstation commercial every other break.

"Playing the angles right, standing my ground, anticipating.  Games like that, there's no room for error."

*lets in 4 goals*
