I agree with that. I just don't think it's really a reflection on Johansen. Short of a McDavid/Eichel I don't think the Leafs should move considerable assets for anyone.

I agree. I think there's a good chance the Leafs could draft a Johansen level player in the next couple years (or could potentially have a couple in Nylander and Marner). If the Leafs were in a similar position to a team like the Rangers or the Blues, where a Johansen could be the last piece they need to win the Cup, that would be one thing, but, outside of that type of scenario, the asking price isn't going to equal the return.

My Ouiji board only has two legs, very difficult to work with.

From the guy who promised you Babcock and was correct way before the day, I will go out on a limb and say Stamkos will be with us as well. Imagine our 4 centres: Stamkos, Kadri, Nylander, Holland in the next year.

So one way to look at this might be like this.  If Johansen was talented enough to be a franchise center for a team, then shouldn't Columbus be better? 

I'm not sure that's really a good measurement. How many years were the Islanders bad despite having Tavares? What does Anaheim's early struggles say about Getzlaf? The Flyers haven't been good in a while. Is Giroux not a legitimate franchise center?

I'm not much on this "rumour" but shouldn't the presence of Seguin on your list at least raise the possibility that top flight players are sometimes available for stupid reasons?

I think if the Leafs were able to sign Stamkos, Kadri would be on his way out. That's assuming Nylander would/will be playing center for the Leafs. And I'm not sure that Babcock is in love with Holland.

If you interpreted it to mean that top quality young players can sometimes be had cheaply then, yes, you misinterpreted it. When Seguin got traded it was for a 27 year old winger with multiple 70+ point seasons(and some prospects).

Seguin might have been available for a stupid reasons but it doesn't mean he came at a discount. If your point is that players like Johansen can, in addition to fetching top prospects, also fetch all-star quality forwards who have accomplished more than the player they're being traded for...well, that's technically true but entirely irrelevant to the discussion because the Leafs don't have anyone like that.

Okay, so the Leafs are getting Stamkos. I figured, but it's nice to hear it backed up by your Mystifying Oracle.

But I did get the Babs thing right from about a year or more before the signing.

Acutally not so sure about Stammer and what will be his big budget demands.
