Kessel traded to Penguins

Even the Caps, I think, have realized that building a team around a winger is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Especially when your top Centre at the time was Stajan.

I don't even care what the exact details are yet, this is a great move. He had to go. Where there is smoke there is fire and I have never doubted the reports that the Leafs are hell-bent on starting next season without Kessel and Phaneuf on their roster. Hard to to have a harmonious locker with that elephant in the room.

While Pittsburgh will undoubtedly make the playoffs, this in no way makes them a contender IMO. Their D needs some serious work IMO.

I really can't imagine the Leafs traded their 2nd rounder there. Maybe Pittsburgh's second rounder but there really should only be 10-12 spots difference between Pittsburgh's first and Toronto's second next year at absolute most.

Dreger's tweet said "Pitt also gets Toronto's 2nd round pick",but it sounds like its The Leafs that are getting the additional pick in the deal.

Neato.

If they didn't retain salary, then you couldn't expect much for an overpaid player with mental/heart issues. If they retained salary, well, it kind of speaks to how his value in the league has dropped because they certainly shopped him and didn't get that much in return from the highest bidder on his list - a late 1st rounder - no top flight prospect.

Kapanen is a top flight prospect. Harrington is a well regarded 2nd tier prospect. Everyone knew any picks would be late in their respective rounds. The teams drafting at the top aren't trading for Kessel.

DarrenDreger: Biggs and Tim Erixson to Pens as well

The Biggs Era is over! Hunwick signing pushed Erixon out. Need the contract space and he's too far down the depth chart now.

Hey, so Burke's two worst decisions dealt with in one single trade.

Solid.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Leafs also sending a second-round pick in 2016 to PItsburgh as part of Kessel deal. The picks they're getting from Pitt are 1st and 3rd

I believe that's Pittsburgh pick going back, but no confirmation on that. Picks Leafs are getting are in 2016.

Phil Kessel + (1.25M retained) + 2016 2nd round pick (TOR or PIT unclear) + Tyler Biggs + Tim Erixson

FOR

1st round pick and 3rd round pick (2016) + Scott Harrington + Kasperi Kapanen + Nick Spaling

Overall I think I can live with that.  I don't love 7 years of cap retention but a 1st + two prospects + a serviceable player isn't a bad return.

The Leafs have 8.6M in dead cap right now between Horton, Gleason, Gunnarsson and Kessel.

Spaling probably returns at least a 3rd at the deadline, possibly a 2nd if he can have a Winnik-esque season. I also expect a few more moves from the team now. This is a pretty clear signal of their direction.

Is this your final answer?

@TSNBobMcKenzie

Kessel, Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon and 2nd in 2016 for Kapanen, Harrington, Spaling, 1st and 3rd picks in 2016. TOR retains $1.25M/year.

I'm pretty okay with this.

Kapanen looks to have played 4 games in the AHL last year, so l like to think he'll be a Marlie this year.

Here's to hoping the Pens bomb just like the Leafs did when we traded picks for him. A 2nd overall pick would be nice! A Seguin and Hamilton please!

Pens barely squeaked in the playoffs. Hopefully they continue to trend down.
