Bobby Mac got a sit down with Dubas and TSN has posted some clips of the interview:

Links above detail the topic of each video.

Coles notes:

- Expects Nylander to be signed before camp starts.  If not, doesn't expect WillNye to be at camp based on precedence.

- They are taking a patient approach to re-signing Matthews and Marner and aren't opposed to discussing extension in-season

- They won't name a captain to start the season and will be patient with naming one.  "We've seen in the past that the rush to name someone can come back to bite you"

- Babcock and him have a good relationships.  Asks that Dubas just doesn't surprise him.

I think Dubas is a fairly smart guy, and he's sending a message here to Nylander's camp when he says that he wouldn't be surprised if he didn't come to camp.

My guess is that there are 2 offers on the table, and they're basically telling camp Nylander to pick one.

This is pretty good stuff. Nothing particularly new if you?ve followed Dubas for the past 4-5 years, but reinforcing The Process and also briefly touching on how his view of the game and management has changed as circumstances have turned into lessons.

If you don?t have time to sit through 52 min of audio (and frankly off-putting third camera angle?the wide shot?that is on the wrong side of the conversation [the 180-degree rule]), PPP has a write up on the salient points (with commentary):

Dubas has referenced Thinking, Fast and Slow a few times now.

Here?s a video based on the findings of that book:

50 copies of Thinking Fast and Slow ebook at the Toronto library and all on hold.  Thanks Dubas

One of Dubas' first moves was to rope in skills consultant Darryl Belfry to focus on building up a select core of Marlies players in preparation for translating their success to the NHL.

Spicy hot take time: While I don't think it's a disaster or anything and I'm sure he may very eventually perform admirably in this regard, Dubas not being able to sign any of the 3 big extensions this summer isn't great.

Big 4 and one of them is signed.

I think it's a fair point.  He boasted about signing everyone and here we are with Nylander holding out.  Ultimately a deal will eventually get done but boasting about being able to do things requires you to also perform.

If I had to guess, I'd guess Dubas somewhat regrets "We can and we will" when he could have given a more non-committal answer. Even if it's not a  huge thing it definitely gave the impression that these deals would be relatively easy to reach, the sort of thing where McDavid signed his a minute after he was allowed.

I don't think it would have impacted any of the players much but their agents may have seen it as a bit of an invitation to a challenge.

They were important to the 3 but I just wanted to correct that we now gave a big 4. And if we only want to use Big 3 the guy now not signed isn't one of them.

Yes, it's almost as if the words after "3" were significant in that sentence.

Extensions. The key word was extensions. 3 big extensions. Not players, extensions.

It's impossible for that to have been any clearer.

I think I just acknowledged  that ??? Just thought you would like to see what being nickled and dimed with corrections felt like. It's either the Big 4 or Nylander leaves the group.

That's not a correction. That's you being unable to understand simple words. Dubas negotiated had the chance to sign three important extensions this off-season. That has nothing to do with Tavares.

Again, the "big 3" in this situation refers to the Marner, Matthews and Nylander contracts. It is not a ranking of the most important players on the team.

The Big 3 doesn't refer to the most important players??? That's some strange logic. If they aren't most important why do their contracts matter so much?  Why not include Gardiner in must do contracts then?  It's either Big 4 or doesn't include Nylander.
