Kyle Dubas: Keep or Move?

Bill33 said:
I think the difference is that the ownership in Pitt knows it's not a great situation - and would be giving the new GM a lot of money, time, and latitude. That would be appealing, I'd think.

I disagree. I don't think Pitts ownership is keen on wasting Sid and Geno's remaining years - which is a big part of why they let the Hextall and Burke go. They want a pretty quick turnaround.

I really think the only option is to run it all back again. I couldn't stomach a reset anytime soon. Change the coach and see who resigns and who walks.

How about Dubas for Pres and Pridham for GM.

Holy heck the free agent market is not great.  Any changes that come are probably going to have to come from trades even if we didn't want to make trades.  What a mediocre free agent class.

I wouldn't be opposed but do we know if Pridham is a capable GM?  We know he knows the cap inside out but it doesn't mean he would make a good evaluator of talent.

Yeah I'd much rather just offer him whatever salary he wants to do his current AGM role.

It's bad. I was even looking to see if there were any Strome-like RFAs that might not get qualified and didn't really spot anything noteworthy.

Do we have any notes on what was said today? Shouldnt locker cleanout be done by now?

You're not likely to get much of anything insightful today. Some players have had exit pressers, and it's really just been the standard type responses.

Take your pick for any Leafs beat reporter's twitter: dalter, jonassiegel, kevin_mcgran. But nothing particularly interesting has really been said, which isn't surprising. Keefe and Dubas haven't spoken yet though.

Looks like Matthews said he's hoping for an extension prior to the start of next season.

Great!

Simple for me:

Kyle, who are you trading?

If he has a clear answer to change the roster I do everything to bring him back.  The person who has a solution to the roster design is the guy who should get the job

My questions:
What's your plan to get Matthews to re-sign?
Who's the coach that can push whatever buttons these guys need pushed to perform in May?

I think Marner should be traded before the NMC/NTC kicks in, so long as it doesn't complicate re-signing Matthews.

One question down, one to go.

Now, just gotta send Dubas behind the barn with Keefe.

The only thing of note is that O'Reilly seemed really open to re-signing - more than just giving the idea lip service. Everything else has been pretty much what you'd expect from these events.

ROR seemed more inclined to test free agency but open to coming back.  I don't blame him.  He's a top tier free agent in a bad free agent class.  He's young enough to get a multi year big extension.  I don't know that Kerfoot money gets anywhere near close enough to get him back

Acciari said he would love to come back.  Great.

Matthews said extension.  Fantastic (only thing is how low can we whittle down his extension)

I have lots of thoughts about the path going forward

Keep: Dubas, Matthews, Nylander
Listen on: Keefe alternatives, Marner* trade market
Try to re-sign: O'Reilly, Acciari, Samsonov
Acquisition Priorities: a 24-28 year old Centre with speed for Tavares, boring RD that PKs
Walk: Kerfoot, Bunting, Holl

* you might not believe it, but I really like Marner and what he does for the team, but given his minutes and internal pressure in the playoffs, in addition to his future contract scenario, the Leafs can make much better use of 11M if it is split between 2 of these three options: legit 2C, budget scoring winger, Hellebuyck. Marner has 2-years term at his absolute minimum price for some team that wants to immediately push from building to contending. It's far harder to shutdown 11M of our roster when it is split over 2-3 players.

ex trade:
CGY: Mitch Marner (10.903), 2 random prospect contract slots
TOR: Andrew Mangiapane (5.8), Elias Lindholm (4.85), whoever is #3 on their prospect chart

Aaand those were really enlightening exit interviews (read on MLHS).  Did Marner do one?  Nylander?

It's encouraging that Matthews seems to genuinely want to re-up.  Everything flows from that.

ROR sounds like he wants to test the waters.  He'd be foolish not too.  Whoever the GM is, assuming he wants to resign ROR, I think the pitch is simple, and runs something like this. take a little less from us to help us get the pieces we need. We can't outbid some other teams in dollars, but we do offer you a chance to win a Cup here, where it matters more than anything else.  You already have a Cup, and a Conn.  Those are great; your place in hockey history is already secure.  But win a Cup for the Leafs?  You'll be a god on Earth.

OK, maybe not exactly those words, but that's the drift.

Yes to both.  They all said the same thing.  "I want to be here".
