Kyle Dubas: Keep or Move?

Maybe it's a bit of recency bias, but I feel like this has been a common issue in Toronto's playoff series losses. And relatedly, a prime reason I think a change of coach could do the team some good.

If the coach could change the approach to assertive, rather than reactive to a series, I'd let Keefe cook.

Tactically, I like Keefe and his foundational approach. Philosophically, I'd like to see him push the team to be the aggressor more often than not. Playstyle-wise, we have to strike a balance on puck possession (which I see they have shifted on over the last 2-3 seasons). The reloads at our own blueline are great for running up the puck possession clock, but it also lets defenses get reset, and our forwards need to spend a lot of energy and puck touches trying to break it down (partly to insulate our slower defense). Given that we play 41 games on one of the slushiest ice surfaces in the league, and have been getting goalied so often, it is nigh time to lean into the chaos and bend it to our advantage.

Holy heck the free agent market is not great.  Any changes that come are probably going to have to come from trades even if we didn't want to make trades.  What a mediocre free agent class.

How is bringing back O'Reilly and signing Toews and Kane to cheap deals not more than mediocre moves? 😅

Well, Toews is basically a spent force at this point. Not sure how much Kane has left in the tank, either. Wasn't particularly impactful for the Rags.

Why was it so hard on his family? Just the nature of the job? Or was there something unique to this year?

Pacioretty, if healthy, on a cheap, short-term deal could be an interesting add. Zucker would probably be my top target (other than resigning ROR and Acciari, and maybe Schenn). And, other than maybe Gostisbehere, not much super appealing on the blueline.

Lots of good quality depth pieces who could potentially hit the market this summer, but in terms of needle movers, it's a really thin UFA class.

Oh... Dubas is trading a key Leaf or two, one of which is likely a core-four player this off season. That I have no doubt about after hearing him speak today... if he is still GM of course. Should be an interesting summer!

He's not giving anyone away for pieces. It will have to be an impact player. Some squabbles about Byram for Willy kind of stuff. We'll see but Willy or whoever isn't going for picks and prospects. The move have to make the Leafs better now.

To the people who have said we need another center what about knies,I was impressed, and he reminds me of a young mats. Tavares on his wing would be training at its best.

I'd keep him.  Never been a big fan, but he's grown on me.  I think he is continually learning on the job, and I hope he is true to his word that anything and everything is up for grabs this off-season.

I suppose a part of my thinking has to do not knowing just who would be out there that could/would be better.  I like the idea of a long-term GM who is here for decades.

Wouldn't be upset if he was fired or chose to move on once his contract expires.  But I don't mind him seeing this through.

Knies is a winger, dude.

I mean, I've also read most of this thread and who would be the obvious replacement? I don't even know.

Eric Tulsky, the brains behind the Hurricanes for the last few years, reportedly interviewed for the Penguins GM job. I imagine he'd be a strong candidate for the Leafs if it came to that.
