Leafs acquire Matt Murray [25% retained]

I was hoping for a more technical analysis, rather than rehashing narrative.

I've used similar techniques with young goalies when training them to follow the puck into their bodies. A lot of younger goalies have the habit of continuing to look at the shooter and allowing their peripheral to track the puck into their body. I've looked at these specific goggles before but have gotten away with simply putting a strip of tape on the lower half of their cage and to the left and right of the cage. Sort of like horse blinders.

Yep, I had a very negative view of the move at the time....and in fairness he has played 9 games so far because he has been injured.  The sample size is small, but extremely delectable.

The Murray deal so far has looked as good as it has partially because the Samsonov acquisition has panned out and Kallgren has been an adequate backup (although not my preference to playing as many games as he has).

My takes look really bad right now though and I couldn't be more thrilled by it.

I think my first reaction to the trade rumours at the draft (post-Mrazek trade) was: "noooooooo"

Cool thing is, I don't think Murray is playing unsustainably out of his mind (last night notwithstanding). He's just mostly in the right spot and making a pretty boring save out of whatever comes in front of him. Samsonov looks a bit more reactive in net, but he is still so young (and skilled!) I think there is a really good base to build a steady netminder out of.

Agreed on this entirely.  I keep looking at the Deserve-to-win-o-meter having the Leafs getting shelled in games lately and I'm really not seeing that when watching them play.  I fully understand why Murray had a huge Goals Saved Above Expected last night because of the early odd man rushes and the constant penalty killing against a really good offensive team.  But even with that in play, I didn't see that as a game the Leafs stole from the Stars.  Score effects came into play.  Dallas was getting away with hooking and holding all through the 2nd and 3rd periods because the Leafs were already up 3-0 and the refs were content to not call anything against them. Had Dallas scored a goal or two the officiating would have changed and the Leafs likely wouldn't have faced half the 2nd period on the PK.

What a fun thread to re-read :D

Yes, and I find post #74 particularly poignant (squirrel blind nut analogy notwitshtanding ;) )

Yes, that guy was consistently on the money (so far)! He should get a raise

As Grandma McFate always said, "If you own a horn, toot it, and not under a bushel basket either."

Good old Grandma McFate...wise words indeed.

As you said, the sample size for both Murray and Samsonov is very small...I'll be more willing to post-mortem at game 60.

I'm not yet convinced that Murray can hang in there the rest of the way.
