Leafs announce Shanahan not returning

He did a lot of things to right and modernize this organization that floundered hard after the advent of the salary cap.

At the end, we basically hit the ceiling of his vision. It probably would've worked if we had McDavid instead of Marner (one lotto ball away), for example, which would make for a different 2016 draft as well (Edmonton drafted 4th after landing McDavid) and Lou probably would've leaned defenseman (McAvoy, Chychrun) or Mark Hunter would've made the case for Matthew Tkachuk.

I'm reliving that draft. I remember the Leafs had the best odds to land McDavid with one ball left and it didn't work out. The NHL probably tried to fix it and messed up lol

Can't really fault Brendan in his time with the Maple Leafs but it was time to move on.
Oh I can fault him. Ultimately it's on the players to produce but by all accounts it was Shanahan constantly protecting the core 4. Phoning them up in the summer telling them they wouldn't be traded etc. What a failure of management.

Easy to blame Shanahan but the players are the ones who have to deliver. They were right there this year and failed bigtime in G5 and G7.

A real leader in management would have identified the failure of these guys to come through years ago and broken up the core. It's a difficult move but it had to be done, the mix just isn't working.

Dubas’ small, fast, skilled hockey was 100% the wrong direction and his contracts were off the charts bad. Then came the only prerequisite to work/play for the Leafs was at some point in your life taking a dump in Sault Ste Marie. What a garbage hire.

The pivot never came and here we are.

I hate that we hate the players right now and that’s on the management. Shielding them at all cost and never holding them accountable.
