Anyone else a wee bit disappointed in how Marner looked in pre-season?

I know he's 18 and all, but he sure looked out of his league for a 4th overall pick.

No?  Just me?  OK then.

I wasn't disappointed per se, but it reinforced for me that Nylander is still our #1 prospect. I thought Nylander looked infinitely better last year than Marner did this.

It's early and everything others have said applies, I'm not down on Mitch at all, looking forward to seeing him tear it up this time next year.

Which isn't altogether surprising considering Nylander already had experience playing in a men's league.  He's the more polished prospect and again that shouldn't be surprising.

Both should be great!

It's also a good reminder that simply because scouts/media personalities were saying that in another year Marner would be a potential #1 pick (without McDavid/Eichel) that it doesn't necessarily mean that he would be the #1 in a stacked draft.  I'm a Marner fan.  Even if he flames out and everyone else excels out of the Top 10 I'm still going to call it as the right move at the time.

He needs another year to build his size.  So for me, I'm not concerned with him not looking dominant because I wasn't expecting him to.  I'll be disappointed if he looks like this next year when he will have an opportunity to try and earn the right to skip the AHL.

jonasTSN1050: Leafs trim roster to 24. Nylander, Kapanen, Brown, Hyman among 11 sent to Marlies.

jonasTSN1050: Others sent to Marlies: Bibeau, Clune, Loov, Percy, Soshnikov, Sparks, and Valiev. Brennan, Campbell, Carrick, Frattin, Froese on waivers.

No real surprises there. Doubt any of Leafs on waivers get claimed.

Yay, patience and intelligence prevails.

And the remnant, with one decision to make, pending waiver changes:

jonasTSN1050: Final spot on Leafs roster presumably comes down to Robidas, Harrington, Panik, Arcobello. Could change with waiver pick-up.

Waiver stuff likely pure speculation on Siegel's part. My guess is Harrington gets sent down. Don't see them keeping him up unless he gets into the lineup on a regular basis.

Also remote possibility of a trade before season opener.

A lot of people were speculating that Harrington would be sticking around. I'm starting to think they might be seriously considering waiving or trading Robidas.

So time to play, guess the line up again. Not necessarily what I want, but what I think the team will do to start...

JvR - Kadri - Boyes
Lupul - Bozak - Winnik
Matthias - Holland - Grabner
Komarov - Spaling - Parenteau
Panik, Arcobello

If Robidas is not waived Then:
Gardiner - Phaneuf
Hunwick - Rielly
Marincin - Polak
Robidas

Else

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Hunwick - Rielly
Harrington - Polak
Marincin

End If

Bernier
Reimer

Marlies should be fun to watch this season.

I think I'd actually rather attend a Marlies game than a Leaf game this year.

It's a shame the AHL live streaming service is both so much inferior and so much more expensive than NHL Game Center

This wasn't your plan from the get go?
Cheaper tickets to see Nylander, Brown, Kapanen, etc. is a win-win.

Lou, talking about the cuts:
https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2015/10/04/toronto-maple-leafs-gm-lou-lamoriello-addresses-sundays-roster-cuts/

How difficult was this process today, and how much temptation was there to maybe keep those young kids around for a couple of games?

Lamoriello: First of all, it?s been an ongoing process to make sure that whatever decisions are made are within the framework of what we?ve put together here as a group, with the plan. But they did extremely well, the younger players in camp. So, there?s an extremely bright future for them, but this is the right decision right now to make sure that we see exactly who we have here ? that is of the veterans and what they bring. You guys still have some decisions to make [with 24 on the roster].

Any reason as to why you may not have got down to the final [23] by today?

Lamoriello: There is some decision to be made, but we didn?t want to hold back on where we knew what we wanted to do. We knew we wanted to get the players into the Marlies and get them stable there, and also get down to the closest number we could for the next couple of days of practice. There is one decision that has to be made, yes.

To be fair, it's a pretty niche market.

It is - and on the occasion I've taken a notion to watch an AHL game on it a one off $8 is ok. But a season pass to watch JUST the Marlies would be $150 on there early bird deal. To watch all games is $299. All you get is the video that shows on the screens in the arena with some local radio audio over the top of it.

Full access to ALL NHL is $115 with all the bells and whistles. If the AHL did something about those prices maybe they'd attract a few more in.

I hate being unable to get any info off their website.  Every link turns up a blank page and says they serve existing customers only.
