And, sure he's our best trading chip, but is he really pricing himself out?  We all thought that would happen to several guys on TB.  So who knows?

If he puts up 30+ goals this season, and comes close or does the same next? Yeah, I'd say so. That's likely $7M+ per for 5+ seasons territory for a guy who isn't going to be your best forward (possibly even not your 2nd or 3rd best, either). Unless they get Nylander, Matthews, and Marner on long-term sweetheart deals, that's not really manageable.

Like I say, it only works if he deals a discount to us because he wants to "be part of something special."

Having said that, if the right trade came along for a defenseman, then of course you have to look hard at it.

I'd probably be ok with either of those but more likely the Leafs need to try to accomplish the latter and land a young-ish top dman. Also, gotta roll the roster somewhat to get more of those good price performance contracts. Personally, I don't see JVR as part of the core in say, two years, and that's really what Leaf management needs to be ruthless about if they want to be contenders, or dare I say it, a 'dynasty' type team down the road.

Well, I'd just say that JVR is young enough to be part of a core.  But yes, it could come down to a tough trade decision.

And I'm getting extremely annoyed at Babcock's handling of Nylander.

Why's that? You don't like him on Kadri's wing?

No, although I'd prefer him back with 34 but just Babcock's mind games with him. It seems once in Babcock's doghouse it's very difficult to get out and I just see inklings of them creating "issues" with Nylander and then trading him.

Personally I don't have enough information to argue for or against this.

Oh goody, it's time for a really well-fought game to be decided by a gimmick.

I really would like to meet the hockey fan who would have had a real problem with that game ending 2-2.

That's an interesting take.

I've been hearing Babcock go out of his way to explain to the media that Nylander on the 4th line is not a message to him; more like spreading out the offense on the road when Babcock can't always get the matchups. I think it shows that Babcock has a lot of trust in Nylander actually: he's using him in a defensive role (either 4th line grind, or Kadri's checking line), as the mirror QB to Matthews' PP line, and also as an offensive NOx boost when pushing for a goal.

I did hear Babcock say that but when you put a Ferrari with two Hupmobile's I doubt the Hupmobiles will be out of the garage by the time the Ferrari is in 4th gear.

Yeah I've never understood what the problem with a tie is. Don't understand forcing there to be a winner. Let the free market decide!

Yeah, if were committed to this idea -- which I think is a good idea -- Martin would scratched for Holland or someone else who can occasionally score. Was it on a shift with Martin and Brown that Nylander threw the puck back and forth to himself up the boards several times while those two didn't do anything?

Is it time to give some of the rookies a rest? Maybe stand back for a game or two more for giving the body a rest, and to see the game in a different light.

Should've used this shootout move:

Did we talk about how dumb of a quote this was:

Linden on the Leafs rebuild :  "How do I say to Daniel and Henrik, ?Strip it down.? I?m not sure it?s fair to these guys." #Canucks

Benning gets a ton of much deserved flack for his awful the Canucks are, but Linden is totally in over his head here.

Let's ruin the entire organization for a few years since it's not fair to Daniel and Henrik to go into a rebuild!

They really should have traded those two to stock up on picks a couple years ago, they'd be far better off now.

And, yet, somehow, it is fair to have them stuck on an awful team that's not going anywhere? I mean, if the team's going to be bad either way . . .

Weren't there reports that the ownership there was trying to sell and didn't want to rebuild as a result? Linden's quote might just be the best justification he can make for a decision being made above him.

Anyways, while I agree it's not good from an asset management standpoint I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the human elements there. I can't speak for all of you but were any of us really happy the way things ended with Mats? And that's not because he didn't agree to be dealt for picks but that he couldn't end his career on a competitive Leafs team. I get what you guys are saying but I don't think you should dismiss that quote too readily.
