Part of the convo should be: Don't underestimate the attraction of playing for Babcock.

Let's not overestimate it either. Money, winning and location are going to come before the coach. The Leafs offer advantages in 2 of those, but are way behind in the 3rd.

He'll get his money anywhere and like you say the location is an advantage.  Many's the guy who's tried to pick going to a winner and it didn't work out.

You're right - Toronto's performance art scene isn't the same as it was ten years ago. He'll have to settle for money and winning.

St Louis and Anaheim could be interesting fits.

Anaheim's always been pretty stingy, I mean they traded a guy whose a 20+ goal scorer this season because they didn't think they'd be able to afford him after his deal expired this summer. I guess they could open their purses for a guy like Stamkos but that'd be 4 guys taking up a pretty huge portion of their cap space on a budget team.

St. Louis is definitely a good fit strictly form a hockey perspective, especially if they let Backes walk. I just imagine that he'll want to stay East for some reason.

Location?

Yes, Nik. The Leafs are way behind in location.

It'd never happen but if Edmonton was to ship out RNH and Draisaitl for defensive help, they'd be an interesting option.

If you're talking about Belesky - I don't think his past performance warranted them opening the vault. He's not exactly tearing it up for the Bruins on a value basis either.

Palmieri. Agree about Beleksy.

It's not often that the CBC crew criticize the opposing teams coach, but they're making some good points about Desjardins.

Sure, but I just don't think who coaches the team has that much appeal. Not enough to sway him over going to a team that is at least already a playoff calibre team.

I don't know, I think it's an advantage for the Leafs. How big of one is up for debate. I think that anyone signing a long-term deal with the Leafs would appreciate knowing who the coach will be for their entire tenure with the team too. Look at a guy like Vinny Lecavalier who openly talked about how much Peter Laviolette had to do with him signing in Philly, and then he gets fired early in his first season.

No, for serious though, it's easy enough to say Toronto has an advantage in Location but until he actually becomes a Free Agent and starts seriously looking into living in places like New York or Montreal it's impossible to say how the various realities of playing in Toronto will play with him.

Sure, but the Leafs also have the appealing of playing for his hometown team, and the team he grew up cheering for. Assuming that holds appeal to him, of course, which none of us really know for sure.

That's all I'm saying. I'm sure for a lot of players being a Leaf looks like fun in the abstract.
