Leafs @ Capitals - Jan. 3rd, 7:00pm - TSN4, TSN 1050

I'm not saying that every collapse has been their fault or anything, but maybe playing the 3 worst defensive forwards on the team together all season long isn't the best idea.

I think it's pretty telling that the Leafs have allowed 5 goals and it's pretty tough to say Andersen's been bad on any of them.

That's exactly what I mean by soft and it happens a lot with this team. Take the guy out. How do you stand in front of an opposing goalie whacking at the puck untouched. Not just the D men either forwards who don't lay a hand on anybody. Horrible.

The forwards on that play were gassed. Your plan to stop that goal is for forwards at the end of a shift to roar across the ice and steamroll the opponents. Hockey doesn't work like that.

Why were they gassed? Were they out there a lot longer than the Caps? I don't know I can't rewind my feed. Not so much the forwards Gardiner was there and didn't lay a hand on anybody.

Every time that it appears Matthews is about to be knocked off or stripped of the puck, he manages to either break free or make a good pass.  The guy is ridiculously talented.

They were at the end of a shift. Gardiner took his man but in order for everyone to be wrapped up, the wings(JVR in this case) would have had to have skated the length of the ice to tie up or, to your tastes, knocked Karlsson over. It just wasn't realistic in this case.

Man, how many times did the Leafs give up a goal on a cross ice pass to a wide open Capital?

Well, at the very least, they're getting an awful lot of experience in how not to play with the lead....

Would be nice if they started to show they were learning from all of this experience, of course. Gonna take a little more time there - and a few upgrades.

Good coverage boys. Why does Babcock keep throwing Komarov out there in OT. His man that got away and and Kadri lost out there as well.

Kadri really had no option there. The guy who shook off the Komarov hit (see?) had a clear path to the net. Kadri tried to cut off the angle to both the net and the pass, but Ovechkin stayed wide.

Komarov on that OT goal is a pretty good example of how grit and hitting your opponents isn't really a catch-all for a team's defensive issues.
