I still enjoyed this game and the fight the team showed.

This is trolling.

Why?  I thought they had a great 3rd

Another moral victory!

Only saw the first period and last 5 minutes of the third. Seems like more of the same? Oh well, maybe next time.

Better than them getting smoked in the 3rd

I think I've figured it out - maybe it's time for the NHL to adjust how it awards points to accommodate the modern era. In addition to the current W, L, OT categories, maybe it's time to add an MV (moral victory) category and award a half a point. I can imagine an algorithm that would account for current team strength (injuries), how well teams have been playing recently, etc. But why stop there...maybe a PW or "Periods Won" column and award a third of a point. That way a team could get blasted in the first period and lose the game, but if they win periods 2 and 3 they'll get something out of it.

Another option for the modern stats junkies would be a CW or "Corsi Win" category. So for a team like the Leafs that skates around with the puck a lot but doesn't really do all that much with it, they'd be able to recoup some points for that while waiting for everything else to regress to normal.

Maybe a ribbon for just showing up and trying.

If you do the numbers 5-on-5 I think you'll see an even starker difference.

Only Andreas 0.17 vs 0.08 and Mitch 0.39 vs 0.26 and John 0.31 vs 0.23 have had upticks in their PP points per game. Everyone else is on par or lower. I'm not sure how stark that is.  :-\

I'd say it's a good thing power play goals count just the same.

Just by way of example, Marner has 4 points 5-on-5 in 18 games this year. That is atrocious. Last year he had 58 points 5-on-5 in 82 games.

Tavares has 4 points 5-on-5 in 16 games this year (and 20 shots!). Last year he had 60 points 5-on-5 in 82 games.

Those numbers would be awful at any salary (nevermind that these guys are earning $11 million per year to be offensive juggernauts).

The issue is you spend more time 5 on 5 during games than on the PP.  If you?re only producing while on the PP for what, 5 minutes a game what are you doing the other 14?15 minutes you?re playing?

My broad outlook, whether they're scoring 5-on-5, 5-on-4, 4-on-4 etc... they are producing. There are two Leafs not producing in any situations up to expectations and they are Ceci and Barrie.

10 of Marner's 18 points are at even strength. I just don't think that's what is sinking the team, a player scoring at a point per game pace, regardless of on-ice situation. Hard to wrap my head around that.

Hi Strange, how did you get 4 points 5 on 5 for Marner?  According to NHL stats he has 18 points, 7 on the PP and 1 shorthanded so that would imply 10 points when even strength no?

5-on-5, not even strength. See here: https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/marnemi01-advanced-5on5.html

Other points are likely with the empty net, 4-on-4, or 3-on-3.

We need these guys to be able to create offence 5-on-5.
