Yet another entertaining tanky finish (now with more tanky start!).

This is the first time my wife stuck around to watch a game in a long time.  I think she enjoyed the fact that we could both cheer for the other team (she says I've grown).

Nice job by Ottawa grabbing a point from the Pens.

EDIT:  Edmonton less than 10 points in the rear view!

My wife usually laughs at me when the other team scores. Now she is slightly baffled when I cheer for the other team scoring. Also slightly surprised that I no longer ignore her when the game is on.

Bernier kept them in for the rest of the game.

Give credit to the Islanders, they've been playing well all season long.  Love that Tavares line!  These Isles can give any team a good run.  Pretty well-balanced team, though.

GO ISLES GO!!

I thought Bernier played real well. Recovered after first two. Couldn't blame him much after yet another give away by Franson... The guys competed in periods 2 and 3 which made it kind of fun to watch

Tonight was the 1st night I felt bad for Kessel after the game.  Button is right when he says that Kessel signed an 8 year deal because he wanted to remain a Leaf.  I think Kessel realized he really isn't wanted.

So it seems like for the last two years the central argument on this site was some people saying that Randy Carlyle's tactics were outdated and outmoded and hurt the team's chances at winning games vs. the people who were saying that the problems with the team ran much deeper than coaching and that firing Carlyle wouldn't result in much change.

So, how is it that it seems that somehow both sides were right?

The hockey gods wanted to unify a divided fan base. They could have given us a Cup but I guess this will do.

I agree..Wherever he goes I hope he is left alone and succeeds... not everyone is Jeremy Roenick with media

There was a third side that said changes to both the coach and the core were necessary.

I'm not sure anybody thought only changing the coach would lead to drastically improved results without changes to the team as well.  But the central idea was that they couldn't keep playing Carlyle's way long-term regardless so the quicker he was gone, and the quicker the younger players stopped playing that way, the better for the future of the team.  While the results in terms of wins haven't been there, there have been some pretty significant changes (and turns out the team IS coachable) to the way the team plays in a short period of time.

Just for the record, this was the exchange:

"Do you worry about your future as you go through this stretch?"

"I go where they want me. I love Toronto, but if it's not here, it's not here."

I don't know. It seems like that question deserved a really defensive and serious response.

Largely because the side that wanted Carlyle out also recognized there were significant issues with the roster, and that firing Carlyle was merely step one. I'd also say some things have changed. The last couple games aren't great examples of it, but, their defensive play has improved. Shots against have been down for the most part, while puck possession has gone up. Players like Rielly and Gardiner who were struggling under Carlyle have played much better since - largely due to them no longer being told not to skate with the puck, etc. Sure, the record is awful, but, the calibre of hockey they've played most night since Carlyle was fired has been better in my opinion.
