Nope. The shooter was on Gardiner's side of the ice. I don't know why he would cover the guy on the far boards with no angle and leave the guy to walk into the slot.

Because his partner was right next to him. I'm working on the assumption that you'd rather have each defenseman take a guy rather than have Gardiner cover both.

His partner took the player going to net, which is the correct move. You could make the point the Martin should have moved over, but noone would have expected gardiner to escort the player on his side without the puck into the far boards and ignore the puck carrier.

That doesn't really make much sense. The guy to cover Johansen shouldn't have been the guy furthest away from Johansen. The right play there is to wheel around so everyone's covered, not expect each guy to telepathically know who to cover.

This game was a solid example of my dilemma with the team going forward. It was a solid win that showed off what the team can do but it's hard to keep looking the other way at these 3rd periods and the ugly shot totals.

One Martin mis-read away from a shutout.

I agree.  I think they're in the playoffs this time, but they are still a ways off from where they need to be.

they're clearly a work in progress.  like the empty net goals for instance.  Early in the season they didn't seem to end up in that situation they never seemed to get them now they're getting them almost on demand.  They're learning.  They adapt.  They're like the borg.  If they can get in I think they'll be hard to make quit.

Just a great, great win against a very good Western club in their barn. So proud of this hockey team. They've been two steps forward, one step back, two steps forward all year. Six games left!

His partner, Zaitsev, wasn't covering anybody.

That was a 3-on-3 where Gardiner was the only Leaf actually in a good position.

Johansen was along the far boards because of Gardiner. He did the right thing, and filtered his man out of the play. If Gardiner takes Forsberg, Johansen is free to cut to the net, and there's a clear passing lane to get him the puck. Martin needed to get into Forsberg's path there - he's the one who really misread the play.
