Nick is right this team has no one to push back. Been like that for a long time now and I think it?s something this team needs. As much as the game has changed you need someone with a little toughness albeit who can play to keep the other team honest. Too many soft players on this team.
*Waits for SJ to score so you can start ripping the team again for lack of toughness/truculence/whatever cliche

I didn?t wait for the team to score. I posted it during the first intermission after Kypreos said it. He?s absolutely right. As much as I love how this team is playing that?s one thing we?ve lacked for a long time. Team isn?t built for the playoffs. As previously mentioned a player like Marchment if he can play in the big leagues is what we are lacking.

Although the fourth line has been good tonight, I feel like Marchment would give them a dimension they don?t have. To be clear he?s not just a goon, he skates very well for someone 6?4? and over two bills, forechecks like a demon and has a good shot as well as being good in tight.

He also wouldn?t be afraid to push back when the opposition are taking liberties physically like the Sharks are tonight and how Boston was Saturday.

Thank you.

azzurri, I don't always agree with your POV but you add a lot here.  Keep 'er going man.

Well been disappointed for a very long time. Love this team always will and how we are competing on a nightly basis against even the Sharks tonight without Matthews and Nylander is impressive. Although playoffs is a whole different ballgame and I personally think that?s one element that?s missing. As much as some of you and I respect everyone?s decision don?t think it?s still an important part of the game I beg to differ.

How'd that whole Matt Martin thing work out?

I question how much of an impact one player in a limited role can have on the outcome of a game or a playoff series. Teams that dominate physically are usually able to do so because they have those players up and down the lineup. The good ones have those players who can also make more than token contributions offensively.

Physicality in hockey is also not just about how much you can dish out, but also how much you can take. While I would generally agree that the Leafs are a little soft and it costs them at times, tonight is an example where the physicality of the game has not been overly detrimental. The Leafs have taken it pretty well.

Martin was too slow I found and wasn?t very skilled.

And how many times have you seen players playing positionally sound hockey, with an active stick beating out players like "tough" players. Could we use some sandpaper? Sure. I'm just tired of seeing the same old cliches over and over when the team gets beaten sometimes.

I've probably said some version of this before but I think physicality, both being able to dish and take hits, is undeniably a good quality in a hockey player but where I think you run into trouble is in valuing it to the point where a player who otherwise wouldn't be in the lineup wins his place there as a result. Typically when we think of "physical" players as a real plus we think of the power forwards who are good enough to play regardless. The value of the 4th line bruiser is something else entirely.

I think part of it is the frustration I get when I see opposing players take shots at our guys and we do nothing about it. Grit is something you have or don?t. Not really something you teach but if I was a scout be something I would definitely look for in a player. Anyway let?s let it go for the rest of the night and watch the last half of this period. Hopefully we put them away.
