Leafs trade Kadri+ to Colorado for Barrie+

Barrie is more of a right handed Rielly. Not as good at driving play as Gardiner. Clueless without the puck like Rielly but is really good at shepherding it into the OZ and getting passes to the right players.

I'm just saying- relative to Dubas' quote about "owing it/improvements";  if Barrie is Gardiner's more or less equivalent, and Ceci is more or less Zaitsev's equivalent, then the only "improvement" to the D from last year to date is the hope that internal options will improve upon Hainsey's minutes.

Am I missing something substantial?

Sakic was holding his cards close to his chest when asked about trade rumours surrounding Barrie at the draft in Vancouver. Goes to show you never know what GMs are really planning....

Rielly - Ceci
Muzzin - Barrie
Marincin/Harpur - Holl

Overall we are looking at an offensively equivalent group from the beginning of last season, but improved on defensive mobility (exits and entries) due to the shedding of Zaitsev and Hainsey. Essentially we?ve covered the loss of Gardiner temporarily to tide the group over until Sandin-Liljegren.

Barrie isn?t the guy I wanted the Leafs to target. There?s a reason he was in the rumour mill to be traded the last 4 years. I think Leafs fans are going to be disappointed with his ability to play defence.

Not that I'm going to argue the point but that's from last year, 2018. We'll see how he does with Muzzin and at 2.75, the risk isn't high especially if Kerfoot can keep popping 40+ points..

While I'm sad to see Kadri go, because of my Kadri winter classic jersey, this makes perfect sense for the the Leafs. Yes they give up an asset they've cultivated over the years, but third line centers are a lot easier to replace then acquiring a top 4 d-man is.

Happy Dominion Day!

Hey man! Good to see you back. It's a Free Agent Day miracle!

For sure!  But hey, 50, it's been so long since you've posted that the Cap is now 81.5, and at a minimum you're now going to have to hit the floor of 60.2 Mission Cap.

This is a great trade.  Kadri really put his team in a bad position 2 years in a row when it mattered most.  His last moment as a leaf was the hit that led to him watching games from the press box.  It was time to move.

Leafs D gonna be a bit better next year.  Dubas with a strong July 1.

Barring serious injury to another player, I'll never stop laughing if Kadri gets suspended again in the first round of the playoffs.

This is the trade that had to come, and Dubas pulled off a good one.  The salary retention is really something of a coup, since we usually come out on the short end of the stick on those.  And getting a cheaper replacement for Kadri as 3C, w/o too much dropoff in talent, is excellent work.

How long we'll be able to keep Rielly, Muzz, and Barrie is another matter for another day....

I'm still skeptical that this kind of defense will work in the playoffs.  I really hope they can lose Ceci and do something about that to help Muzzin out.

Sorry to see Nazem have to go before the team actually contends.  His career looked like it was going off the rails a few years ago but he straightened his attitude out and became a really effective player.

Colorado is going to have a hell of a team.

Because of this, I'm starting to think the Leafs really need to go for it this season. Get Marner signed to the cheapest bridge deal you can manage, dump Ceci, and use all that extra cap space to improve for the short-term as much as possible.

Great day for Dubas and the Leafs. No complaints from me. Didn't like seeing Brown go but was necessary. Kadri's fate was sealed in the playoffs. He had to go but the return was very good.

Maybe.  A worstish-case scenario would be if Muzzin and Barrie both really click and we (say) lost in the finals.  They'd be due raises we can't afford.  What worries me even more is that at some point we may not be able to afford Rielly if he keeps playing at this past season's level.

Not sure why people keep bringing up the suspensions as the reason for the trade... actually I do know why: easy narrative.

Kadri was the best trade chit we could afford to move on from under the right circumstances for an RD (thanks to Kerfoot). He?s 30 at great cap value and has scored 30 goals before. Trading Nylander is asinine. Kapanen or Johnsson are individually not enough for anything worthwhile. This was simply the cost of doing the business of trading from strength to shore up a weakness.
