Leafs trade Kadri+ to Colorado for Barrie+

How long we'll be able to keep Rielly, Muzz, and Barrie is another matter for another day....
Not sure the Leafs D will be all that bad if we can't keep both Barrie and Muzz. We know Rielly is here for 3 more years. You have to think that Liljegren and Sandin will be ready after next season so we should still have a good top 5 with Rielly, Dermott, Liljegren, Sandin one of Barrie and/or Muzzin. My bigger concern comes after next year when Freddie's contract runs out. Will one of the kids be ready to take over?

If I?m future casting the defense, I can see us moving Ceci and extending one of Muzzin or Barrie, but not both. The outgoing player is replaced by Sandin or Liljegren?s contribution.

Barrie will be more expensive (points = $), but he?s younger and plays the harder position to fill. Replace Muzzin with Sandin and it?s fine.

Rielly - Dermott
Sandin - Barrie
Whoever - Liljegren

Then when Rielly is too expensive we let him walk

Dermott - Barrie
Sandin - Liljegren
Whatever - Duszak/Hollowell

Not sure why people keep bringing up the suspensions as the reason for the trade... actually I do know why: easy narrative.

Kadri was the best trade chit we could afford to move on from under the right circumstances for an RD (thanks to Kerfoot). He?s 30 at great cap value and has scored 30 goals before. Trading Nylander is asinine. Kapanen or Johnsson are individually not enough for anything worthwhile. This was simply the cost of doing the business of trading from strength to shore up a weakness.

They can spin it all they want to but you know the players and management were pissed off at Kadri for that suspension. I know I'd be and while he wasn't the main reason they lost, he contributed in a way he shouldn't have. So while he was a good trade chip, his suspensions sure made it easier to let him go.

While I'm sad to see Kadri go, because of my Kadri winter classic jersey, this makes perfect sense for the the Leafs. Yes they give up an asset they've cultivated over the years, but third line centers are a lot easier to replace then acquiring a top 4 d-man is.

Happy Dominion Day!

Hey man! Good to see you back. It's a Free Agent Day miracle!

Yes reports of my death were rather premature...and it's a long story. :-)

Agree. I can see this happening.

For sure!  But hey, 50, it's been so long since you've posted that the Cap is now 81.5, and at a minimum you're now going to have to hit the floor of 60.2 Mission Cap.

I see I have my work cut out for me. Always up for a challenge. :-D

Whoa there, Mr. Sangfroid.  I hope it's that easy but at least as of now Muzzin brings some traits to the D that no one else does.  I haven't seen Barrie play a minute yet but if the choice is between keeping him or Muzzin then I'd lean Muzzin, barring an auspicious audition by Sandin that shows he really can replace Muzz.

As an aside, the moves today have suddenly shifted the balance of chatter-interest to the D side of the team.  The big four are pretty much known quantities and have ceased to be interesting.  8) 8) ::) ::) :P :P :o :o

This one hurts. Kadri genuinely loved playing on the Leafs and grinded it out through some brutal years. His possession, hands and hockey intelligence were amongst the best on the team (the guy can really thread a pass). But he was valuable so I guess this is a pill the Leafs had to swallow.

I don?t think we have a single forward left capable of throwing a body check.

Does this mean we still won?t beat Boston? 😥

Every thread is a little overstated. I'm also not dedicated. Just a realist when it comes to his salary and the crunch we're under.

Friendly bet: I say Hyman finishes his current contract with the Leafs (2 seasons left) without getting traded. If I'm wrong, "Guilt Trip was right" goes under my avatar for a month. Vice versa if he isn't traded.
Sure why not? I've been wrong before lol.

I'm takin' Carltons side on this one. Hyman ain't goin' nowhere.

I debated internally the same thing. Muzzin brings balance to our D group.
The downside is his age. I don't want to spend a big UFA extension on a defensive Stanley Cup champion at 30+ years old who already plays a rough and tumble style on the left side.

On the flip side, the last time the Leafs had a right shot defenseman who could sit reasonably comfortably at the top of the depth chart was... Bryan McCabe. This is why Lou pulled the trigger on Zaitsev for term, because RD are so hard to find. Unfortunately, Zaitsev didn't work out the way we were using him here. Barrie, on the other hand, is Rielly on the other side of the ice and has played those top minutes. We have an opportunity to extend him let's say 6x7M in January and still be getting a lot of his good years left and give our weaker side more time to grow (or find new blood). He is already well aware that this team fits his playstyle, which shouldn't wear out as easily.

I really wish we got someone with more years of control. I guess this was the best opportunity that presented itself and does address an immediate need at a time we should be somewhat peaking.

I am glad the D has been addressed in a meaningful way. I am not sure why everyone here was crapping on posters who were saying we need to address the D. Obviously management agreed. 3-4 rookies would have been ugly.

You mean right-side defenseman? McCabe is a left-hand shot.

Indeed.  I have in my mind right now Kabby dishing perfect passes to McCabe for the blaster.

Man was that ever a good trade.  Yusky was great.  We trade him for a year of Svehla who was awesome too.
