Luongo to Florida

If Vancouver isn't sending something else then they are really fleecing Florida and giving them a huge contract with a fairly nice return.

I don't know if I'd call getting a goalie prospect who is about to become more of a goalie project and a 3rd line forward "fleecing" anyone. Luongo's contract sucks, sure, but, he's still an excellent goalie. Florida is getting the best player in this deal, and by a very wide margin.

Absolutely the best player but with a horrible contract unless they plan to buy it out. Getting a prospect or project back worth a minimal salary and a forward who plugs in immediately to fill the gaping holes in their lineup is a win for them. They certainly didn't give away the contract but I would have expected they would have paid to make it go away a little more.

Also, the risk of Luongo retiring before ending his contract is assumed by the Canucks. The Panthers have nothing to worry about if he decides to call it quits in the next 5 or so years.

Capgeek link

So if he retires in 2021 with a year still left, Canucks get hit by an ~8.5M cap penalty.

Regroup? They're going nowhere if they run Lack/Markstrom in net next season. The only good thing it does it set them up for a full-blown rebuild, which might not have happened with Luongo in net because he could have kept them in a playoff race.

But, with the Sedins signed for another 4 years, I just don't see them going for a full-blown rebuild. Unless Gillis and Torts are fired after the season, my guess is that they are very much going to be looking to regroup, and it's going to be a mess for them.

meh, even better for anybody who isn't a Canucks fan then.

The cap hit and length is much less of a concern for Florida than it would be for just about anyone else. They have more than enough space for it. They just basically stole a very good starting goalie without giving up any important pieces of their roster or, really, of their future, either. Matthias doesn't really fill any of the holes in the Canucks lineup, either, since their really issue is scoring goals, and he's not really good at that.

And not to forget the place that Luongo wants to go to as well

It maybe alleviates some of the sting Panthers fan felt when Luongo was initially traded to Vancouver. Although I guess they did still miss out on his prime years.

I hope we get to reacquire Rask for scraps at some point.

DarrenDreger: Obviously Luongo trade to Panthers required tons of work. Many discussions since Sunday and many different player scenarios discussed...

DarrenDreger: ...We believe Markstrom is included. We believe the Canucks are eating salary and other players involved.

Interesting.

Good for Luongo. He has been through so much crap the last few years and has taken it all in stride.

From Luongo/Schneider to Markstrom/Lack. Wow.

Jovanovski maybe?

I was thinking Upshall or Fleischmann, but, yeah, maybe Jovo goes back to Vancouver.

EDIT: Or, not:

reporterchris: It sounds like Shawn Matthias is heading to the #canucks along with Jacob Markstrom.

If Vancouver isn't sending something else then they are really fleecing Florida and giving them a huge contract with a fairly nice return.

Contract is not an issue for Panthers - they have had issues just reaching the cap floor.

FriedgeHNIC: Luongo and Steven Anthony for Markstrom and Matthias. Canucks are picking up part of the salary....will be finalized after trade call

This is funny.  The guys on Hypeville tomorrow will spend all day talking about deals that went down today.

EJ Hradek: "@EJHradek_NHL: To summarize, Schneider & Luongo were traded for a 1st round pick (Bo Horvat), Jacob Markstrom and (reportedly) Shawn Matthias"

Ouch.

TSNBobMcKenzie: VAN is taking back money on Luongo's contract. It varies in amounts each year. Around $1M (ballpark) for each of first four years.

If I'm a Vancouver fan I am pissed right. Last year you had two great goalies in Schneider and Luongo.

Now, they have neither. Gillis reaching Mike Milbury territory.

Wait for it...Kesler still hasn't been traded yet....

DarrenDreger: Luongo and Steve Anthony to Panthers for Markstrom, Mathias and the Canucks retain 15% of Luongo's salary for rest of his contract.
