Luongo

Martin Biron appears he will not be signed by July 1.  He is still a card on the table, if nothing else.

from Larry Brooks: 'Biron's agent tells Post: "Marty's first choice is to remain in NY but there is still work to be done..." nyp.st/MxB8ac

Maybe FLA will sign him? ;D

@DamoSpin Btw, VAN asking for Bjugstad, first rounder and a good roster player. Makes no sense for FLA.

Yup. No way a team in the middle of a rebuild, with a goalie who was already good enough to get them to the playoffs and another very promising young goalie prospect does that. Especially when that team is being run by Dale Tallon. Gillis is out of his tree.

I really hope someone signs Schneider to an offer sheet. Then things will really get wacky.

i don't really understand Florida's interest. It basically just sets up their own Schneider type situation with Markstrom a couple years from now. Again, taking him for free...ok, but paying for it? And at a decent premium?

Would really like to know who Gillis has asked Burke to part with for Luo. Im sure we'd all be angry about it.

Most speculate it starts with Gardiner.

And Burke has said he isn't going anywhere.

Given Luongo's contract, asking for Gardiner seems close to unrealistically insane to me - unless there's more coming back the Leafs way. There are simply not a bunch of teams stampeding to get Luongo, in large part because of his contract (many teams cannot afford the risk) and his recent play.

If Luongo stayed with the Canucks this season, I wouldn't be shocked.

I don't either.

As well, Florida has had more than their fair share of money problems.

One rumour that kind of made some sense very roughly (relating to Tampa, Florida): LeCavalier for Luongo. But with the rumour came the suggestion that the Canucks were not interested.

Yeah, although I guess an argument can be made that Luongo is somewhat more attractive to a cash strapped team when he represents 3 million or so less in actual salary vs. his cap hit over the remaining term of his deal.

For sure.  Gillis is trying to trade a player with a) a high-value, very long-term contract, b) a no-trade clause, c) the player asking for a trade, d) an extremely limited market to trade to both in terms of goaltending need and waiver of NTC, while e) very obviously having no further need for the player.  He HAS to trade this player, and it's plainly obvious to everybody.  He is trying to trade a decent calibre of player while having a very obvious and extreme weakness in negotiating position.  Gillis would be very lucky to get anything other than a bad contract player in return.

It seems almost unthinkable that Gillis should think he has any negotiating leverage with anybody to unload Luongo.  He can wait all he wants, I don't think any of the very few teams talking to him is going to blink at all on this one.  Sure, the closer it gets to September, the more Luongo might be willing to look at other teams, and maybe that's what Gillis is after, but I doubt that would change Gillis' trading prospects much, if at all.  For that matter, if he sits on this into September, it will be sure to be a circus in Vancouver.

I'm going to enjoy watching that asking price fall to nothing, or perhaps more likely, worse than nothing.

I'm with you on this one, I don't get it either. Could it be made up? Because, as of the end of the draft, I think Tallon said "I've had no discussions about that player".

Which might be great for Tampa but dumping Luongo to take on $2 mil more in cap hit for LeCavalier isn't so rosy for the Canucks.

Sorry that was my mistake on that post. I meant to quote the bit of your post that referenced that the Panthers are hard up for cash. It might make him slightly more attractive to the Panthers on that basis.

I still wouldn't trade for him though.

It has to be Nonis who has been in discussions with this jackass, because I'm sure Burke's Irish blood would have come to a boiling point right after hearing the first counter offer.

So there's the 2 1sts "plus". You're right though - this is going to be quite funny. There's no way that Vancouver gets near that value when they're dealing from such a position of weakness. Extremely small number of potential buyers, really huge contract, disgruntled player etc.

EDIT: And yeah...you covered this all quite eloquently in a subsequent post.
