Luongo

My concern is - Grabbo - $5.5; Kessel - $5.4+; Phaneuf - probably $5-$5 in a new deal and Luongo - $5.3 = $22 mil in 4 players not counting a Lupul or JVR. None save Luongo would be considered a true superstar - so we then go blow our brains out on a Getzlaff or Perry and we're at $30 m for 5 players - again not counting JVR at $4.25 and say Lupul at $5 so $40 m for 7 players leaving 16 players vying for eg $20 mil?

I know he gets his share of flak, but I'm not sure there's anyone left who doesn't consider Phil Kessel a superstar.

Well he's a hard call on the "superstar" label for me. His stats are certainly up there with those considered "superstar" but to me, he's too quick to "disappear" in the big games - granted the Leafs have not had many  ::).

I really do like him but he's got a reputation to shake as shying away from the hard areas of the ice. Chara is in his head but Chara is in quite a few heads too. But Phil is certainly the closest player we have to a "superstar".

Yeah it's a good question; is he a superstar?

It goes without saying that it really depends on how he follows up from last season, where he certainly performed as a superstar... yet it was his first time performing as one after a few seasons of steady 1st line production.

If he repeats in the top 10 range in points, that would probably solidify the claim that he is. Right now, it's hard to say.

Dallas Eakins: Ben Scrivens "officially in a fight for the net". No. 1 status in jeopardy for tonight's starter vs. Houston.

There's not a lot of games to base much of a judgement on yet, but, he's been underwhelming so far. Certainly hasn't looked like the guy many hoped would challenge Reimer for the starting spot on the Leafs.

That's ok. Luongo's on his way, just as soon as they wrap up the new agreement next week.  ;)

Yes with Allaire out of the picture our goaltending, always a positive will become a real mess.

Never thought about it that.  Did he train with Gary Roberts this summer?  :P

Is this Strombone1 guy on twitter really the guy most people believe him to be? :D

Well, if it really is him, I think he just did.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/roberto-luongo-toronto-maple-leafs-jersey-sale-ontario-215354644--nhl.html

Why did Pro Image decide to start selling Roberto Luongo Leafs jerseys before the team can even trade for him? We decided to find out.

First off, it's a Luongo jersey, rather than jersey(s). And you can thank the lockout for it.

It went up about two weeks ago, as Leafs jerseys (or really anything hockey) haven't been moving during the work stoppage. One of the store's owners decided to create something to garner a little buzz and attract some eyes to the hockey merch:

;D

I think Luongo has convinced me I want him here because of his humour about the whole thing.  He's a pretty down to earth guy.

This new CBA option for one buyout that doesn't go against the CAP is the main reason why I would now opt for a Luongo deal (provided we don't have to give up too much). Previously, I was against such a deal over the potential of being locked-in if or when things went badly. But now he could be the Leafs buy-out if need be. Money is not an issue to them and there aren't a lot of long term deals in place on the Leafs, Grabo and JVR (both which hopefully we be reasonable value long term). If the Leafs can pick up Luongo without giving up any future building blocks or any 1st round pick, it would make sense to make the deal. Reimer and Scrivens could still battle for quality back-up minutes. And, they still have a few goalie prospects in the system (Rynnas, Owuya and Sparks) that a trade of either Reimer or Scrivens (in a package deal) might bring something.
When I look at how little the Nash deal brought to Columbus (after all that hoopla) and I can't imagine Luongo at his age and given the Canucks situation, costing too much.

I could be wrong but I thought the buyout had to take place before the 13/14 season.

No, you're right. It's a compliance buyout, not a free ordinary course buyout. It has to happen in the summer of 2013 - and probably during a specified period during the summer.

Slapshot, I'm confused. Are you suggesting the Leafs could deal for Luongo and then buy out his contract ?

Ok, thanks busta... so, Komisarek it is, eh?
