Luongo

I don't see the Leafs being able to keep up with the offer, or the chance to win now.
Holmgren completely shut down the rumors, saying "Safe to say they aren't true. They have no basis or merit."

Leafs weren't interested either according to Burke.

Thing is that over the course of the whole time that Luongo's been available  rumours have popped up sporadically about "new teams entering the mix" like Chicago and Columbus and Edmonton and Florida...and nothing ever happens and no serious discussions ever seem to take place. It's always anonymous sources too.

I don't want to say that these rumours have the Canucks fingerprints on them but...well, that's exactly what I think.

That's a possibility I suppose.  But with the ability to buy out Bryzgalov, it may have changed the Flyers minds about the direction they want to go with their goaltending.

This sounds right to me.

How does Nonis feel about Bryzgalov? Apparently he knows a lot about the universe. That knowledge may be helpful down the road.

Contract aside, I don't understand the debate that always comes up over Luongo's abilities or his body of work. Luongo's still pretty damn good, adding him will significantly upgrade the backend.

There are major issues of whether to acquire him because of his contract, his longevity, and what assets are given up... but when people say that acquiring him won't make a big difference on this season, I don't think they're being realistic.

When you look at the current goaltending situation, it just doesn't match up to the standard of almost all those other NHL teams. Especially with the defence being shaky and lacking confidence already.

The talk is Gardiner and Kadri for Luongo.  A little to steep for my liking.

The talk in Vancouver maybe.

Ya I wouldn't take anything from there seriously. During the summer they thought they were getting Huberdeau, Bjugstad etc from Florida... they're not the sharpest fanbase.

In general, when big name stars get traded everyone under-estimates how stingy GM's are with their young talent. I think every team usually has a couple guys that are off limits.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that fans are generally way off base when it comes to gauging trade values of high end players. Local beat writers aren't much better either (though, this varies by market). Unless it comes from well established guys like McKenzie, LeBrun, etc, there's generally not much truth to it.

My second "ugh" of this morning;

@DarrenDreger
Luongo rumor to Toronto won't fade. Burke wanted him bad and Nonis will push as well, but Canucks insist other teams are in play.

I have a bad feeling this will happen and we'll overpay.

Dreger also has said that Nonis won't overpay.

Flyers were crazyto signthat Bryz contract and now are considering buying him out???  Isn't he still owed $30 something million?  That would be one huge amount paid to someone to go away.

If there is one thing the Flyers have shown in the past, it's that they always make prudent and level-headed decisions regarding their goaltenders.

DONT DO IT!

This will set our franchise back another 5 years by taking on his crippling contract. With the salary cap being reduced next season I just don't see why you want to tie up so much of it for a goalie.

The leafs need to wait until they have a team that is a piece or 2 away from being a contender and then assess the goalie situation... they have a long way to go before that happens.

Holmgren's denial and little chuckle just confirms it even more.

(Jeff) Carter's agent:  Holmgren Lied

All GM's lie and fib sure but Holmgren without question is the least honest.

The bottom line is I don't think Holmgren can come right out and say "Yeah I am targeting Luongo."  I think at the end of the day it's just easier to say "No comment" or "I have no interest" or "We have not discussed a deal".

I think it would be hard to judge who is the least honest GM.

I think the Philly "interest" in Luongo is Vancouver generated.  They float it out there in hopes that the price is raised.

I don't know about generated, but I'd say it's overstated. Like any team without elite goaltending that isn't in the midst of a tear down/rebuild situation, I'm sure they've checked in on Luongo - got an idea of his availability, the asking price, etc - that is, after all, just due diligence and a pretty standard part of any GM's job. I have my doubts they've gone much further than that.

Just listening to Nonis of the fan590 and while he obviously can't speak about Luongo, he doesn't seem to keen on dealing Gardiner... (Paraphrasing) - We'd only deal a young D building block for a young building block at another position.

He wouldn't deal prospects/younger players for vets when he was in Vancouver when they were much closer to contending. I don't see him significantly changing that with the Leafs, considering where they are in the building process.

Here's the quite;

#Leafs Nonis to Hockey Central on trading Gardiner or Rielly: "We would only move a young playuer for another young player.
