Luongo

We'll see what most of us around here think when the goaltending starts to struggle.

I think what you'll see is most of the opinions on Luongo are independent of the Leafs' goaltenders performances. On top of that, if they do suck, that means the team likely gets another high pick and maybe ends up with someone like MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov - so, it's almost win-win.

I think what concerns me most isn't that our goaltending duo will suck, because like you said, there's a reward on draft day for that. I'm bothered more by the inconsistency of inexperienced goaltenders. They play well at times, then tend to hit ruts more often then veterans, and when they hit the skids it's blown up to epic proportions in a city hockey mad like Toronto. Hopefully one of these guys can prove me wrong, but its been a long time since we've seen a rookie goaltender come into his own as a Leaf.

Good point, that must mean were due for one to shine. just maybe its Scrivens.

or get a starter via UFA

or trades for someone else who might be more reasonable to try to avoid the longer term crippling cap baggage Luongo's contract brings

Or, maybe Rynnas or Owuya emerge as legit NHL starters. Either way, Luongo is just not that appealing an option.

Yep that too or snag an undrafted young UFA like them who surprises in Europe.

10 more years @ 5.3 mil/yr for a guy turning 34 in April, and is likely to decline in the next 2-3 years if he hasn't started to decline already, still makes little sense to me for a team trying to rebuild.

On HNIC, before the bad game last night, they reported that the price the Canucks were asking for Luongo had fallen from a player, prospect & pick to a player and a pick. (which is still a deal I would never do if I were the Leafs).

Maybe what i'm about to ask has been entertained in this thread:

The time for this roster to have a good shot at winning is pretty close to now. Their top line is 31-32. Kesler's going to wear out faster because of the way he players. So I wondered if Vancouver had considered moving Schneider. Luongo over the next 2-3 years is probably capable of winning behind a good team. And before last night, they could have commanded a great return for Schneider - maybe/arguably more than what they were asking for Luongo. And Schneider suddenly isn't a bum because of one game.

Had to be a tough games to watch for Gillis: the guy he's handing the #1 job to gets lit up while rumored Luongo compensation, Kadri & Bozak, score and star and the Leafs goaltending by Scrivens results in HNIC naming him first star of the game.

I'm delighted with last nights results, but I still see a need to acquire a goalie like Luongo. I would trade Bozak and a 2nd for him today.

And that makes most of us around here glad your not GM. ;D

I think the perfect textbook definition of a masochist would be a Leafs fan that believes that the universe operates on the premise that a long time without makes you due for good things.

I wonder if the Flyers are crazy enough to buy out Bryzgalov and take on Luongo's contract? I know its real early, but they can't be happy with their 0-2 start.

Bryzgalov has a no movement clause. Whatever they do, if anything this season, they'll probably have to do so with Bryzgalov's blessing. His cap hit is a little bigger than Luongo's. A compliance buyout won't help them this season.

As Busta pointed out, the bigger issue they may have might be with their D.

good to see the usual crew continue to chop down the positive view points with reguard to the leafs.  :-X

Dude, the usual crew is just being realistic. Every year since the lockout you have said that this is the Leaf's year and they are going to breakout. Every year you have been wrong. I'm sure you'll excuse everyone else here for trying to be honest about the Leaf's chances instead of just blind optimism.

+1

It's fine to be optimistic but every season you claim the Leafs are great and will show all the doubters wrong. Every single year. Then you roll your eyes at people who put down the Leafs. Every single season since the last lockout the nay sayers have been right.

Gillis seems like a stubborn prick.  I think he would wait over a year to get the deal he likes.

You mean Schenn, who was a 3rd pairing dman on our team, which is one of the worst teams defensively in the nhl, is not the savior?

"Gillis says he has trade in place for Luongo re @rcamcole barring some shoes to drop and I can confirm deal he talks about isn't with Leafs."

I hope we didn't let a big opportunity pass us by. I know his contract sucks, but he certainly could have taken this team to the next level.

I'll hold out for the Ryan Miller and Tyler Ennis trade to Toronto...

I'd love Luongo to go to another team. A) It would put an end to this crap and B) Perhaps there would be a domino effect and it would shake loose a depth guy somewhere which really, makes much more sense for the Leafs... Small sample but after two games, Leaf goaltending does not appear to be much of an issue.

I would side on extreme caution re: Leafs current goaltending. Hopefully something else comes along fast if a Luongo goes elsewhere.

Let me know when that train pulls into the station.  ;)
