Luongo

I'm tired of Gillis. For once I'd like to see a club hamstrung by one of these idiot contracts, even if it means he has to buy Luongo out next year and get nothing in return. If someone is fool enough to deal for him, they get what they deserve when / if Luongo retires at 37.

I agree. It seems so far that teams have been able to get out from under these things (right Burkie?). Of course the trades that have occurred have been at the relative beginning of these deals so the player should still be performing at a rate that earned the deal in the first place. It will be when these guys turn to slugs with 5-6-7 years left on there deals that things will get interesting.

I really hope what Gillis says is true and some other team can work things out to get Luongo on their team. Anything to get this whole saga over with and to eliminate any possibility of Luongo coming here.

Gillis is is own worst enemy with these negotiations. Just when the story is starting to simmer, he holds this interview and claims a deal is nearly done.

It had better be, because if it isn't, the only thing he has done is turn the heat back up to a boil again. All the pressure is on him, until he finds a team that accepts his terms on a trade. This guy really is a joke.

I agree, and as others have mentioned it really does seem like another instance of Gillis manipulating the media to try and stir up some action on the Luongo front and coax a better offer from teams. So far it hasn't worked, but yeah everytime we hear news about Luongo these days, it's mostly initiated by Gillis and it's getting more like a "boy who cried wolf" scenario.

But that being said I still pray that there is some truth to it and the Canucks are actually close to a deal with another team, because I am not a fan of him coming to the Leafs unless it's a bargain basement price; and obviously such a deal is not going to happen.

Just consider that he's just using that kind of rhetoric to put pressure on a team to make a deal.  I doubt there's any team with a deal in place with the pieces he's looking for...it's just posturing.

The problem Gillis has is that he's already stated the return he's looking for publicly...and if Luongo doesn't play well, and fast, his return may very well be nothing.

Maybe there's something to the Philly rumor - and it hinges on Philly being able to unload Bryzgalov (which may be even tougher than trading Luongo)

Maybe one of these teams:
Detroit
Chicago
New Jersey
Florida
Edmonton
Islanders
Columbus

But I can see difficulty with every one of them trying to take on Luongo's contract

Yeah philly is overflowing with good players.  Philly is the odds on favorite.

It might be the Tampa Bay Lightning.  The player that needs to be moved first would be Lecavelier.  Plus Luongo still has his no trade clause which would greatly reduce the number of teams in the running.

Are Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis' comments that he has a Roberto Luongo deal in place accurate?

LeBrun - I can tell you, via sources, that Robert Luongo is still a member of the Vancouver Canucks.  They are not closer to trading him, despite the kerfuffle that was caused with Mike Gillis' quote in Cam Cole's column.

Is there another team out there we haven't spent a lot of time on?  What about the Philadelphia Flyers?  If the season ends and Luongo is still a member of the Canucks, I believe the Flyers could still be a factor if Ilya Bryzgalov has another terrible season and they are willing to buy him out.  Until then, I don't see the Flyers as a possible trade partner.  Toronto remains the number one destination and whether Gillis was trying to smoke out the Leafs, that's a possibility, but they believe they are the only trade partner and they are trying to wait out Vancouver. It's a game of chicken.

Which contract would you rather have? Luongo or LeCavalier?

Lecavalier's more likely to be useful for the entirety of his than Luongo.

But LeCavalier starts off, this year, with a cap hit that probably exceeds his worth by perhaps $2 million and it will just keep getting worse.  It looks to me like his shots per game have started a slow, consistent decline already and that is very worrisome.  Now, if Tampa could keep some of his salary ...

Nonis ought to be able to outmaneuver Gillis here, easily.  Even if he sits on the sidelines and wacthes while Luongo goes to Columbus for futuristic considerations.

Useful, yes. Difference maker, no. Stability in net (even for 5 years) > another scoring forward (for 5 years) Goalies usually have longer careers as well. Not even a close one for me. Luo hands down.

5 years might be on the optimistic side for Luongo. Goalies are a little unpredictable, and when they start to fall, it tends to go fast. Based on the history of guys who have played the position, Luongo really has somewhere between 2 and 6 seasons of effective starting goalie type play left in him - with the most likely number being 4 (and that includes this season). After that, you have a number of years where he's not likely to even be particularly effective as a backup - and, if he doesn't retire, you're left with a big chunk of dead cap space (and, if he does retire, a smaller chunk of dead cap space). At least, with Lecavalier, if he's healthy, he'll be able to fill a 3rd/4th line role for the entirety of his contract.
