Marlies Talk

I'm a little surprised Sportsnet hasn't been carrying them, especially considering their programming is regional so their Ontario channel would probably do better numbers with a Marlies game then their usual programming.

I assume Baseball is doing better for them then any sort of AHL hockey would do.

That, and the fact that their parent company owns the Blue Jays probably plays a significant part in their scheduling decisions.

For Jays games I would understand, but they aren't playing all the time. For games 2 and 3 Sportsnet just has UFC programming showing (I can't look ahead any further than that). Considering the support the Marlies have had at Ricoh during the playoffs so far I would have to imagine a game would put up better numbers than that.

I doubt it, actually. For whatever reason, the UFC stuff is a huge draw (relatively speaking, of course). Also, you have to consider, most of the people that might watch the Marlies games are likely to choose an NHL playoff game instead.

Fair enough, I'm not entirely sure how well the UFC stuff does. But considering the current matchups left in the NHL, especially in the West, I don't think it's certain to say that Ontario hockey fans wouldn't watch a Marlies game instead.

I guess I could go back to complaining about LeafsTV, but it's just too easy.

Maybe but they have to program well in advance, right? They couldn't be sure the Marlies would be in the second round of the playoffs and if they were stuck with Abbotsford-Rochester I'd imagine they'd be praying for the ratings the UFC would get.

Well the Marlies made it into the 2nd round pretty early, so Sportsnet had about a week to figure things out. But that's a fair point if they had prior contractual obligations to other programming.

Again, I'll just say LeafsTV sucks then.

Does anyone understand the business strategy of Leafs TV?

When TSN and Sportsnet first came into existence, they struggled to fill all of the programming hours with decent content.  (Anyone remember the endless of hours of Australian football?)  But they worked at it and ended up with a need to add extra channels (TSN2, regional Sportsnet channels) to handle everything.

When I initially subscribed to Leafs TV, I thought that they would go through the same growth curve.  But, no.  Those of us who are not Rogers subscribers cannot watch the Marlies playoff games live.  So what is on Leafs TV instead?  Reruns of reruns of what was boring filler the first time that it was aired.

It seems like Leafs TV are going out of their way to have every subscriber question why they bother to make the investment.

ahh the 2 3 2 format for best of 7 ...always felt like this actually rewarded the lower seeded team.  hopefully the marlies can win the first two .always looks ugly going back to their place for 3 when it's 1-1.

It is frustrating, and to have to watch the nucks and flames with not too many other hockey options sucks. Not sure if it?s a CRTC thing or just a $$ grab for PPV. Whatever. they are losing viewership by not having something better on Leaf TV than, reruns of reruns.....yawn. I plan on taking in game three, long way to go but it would be great to see the up and comers.

Marlies forward lines in practice today:

D'Amigo-Colborne-Frattin
Hamilton-Zigomanis-Kadri
Mueller-Dupuis-Deschamps
Rosehill-Acton-Scott

Carter Ashton has been shut down because of his concussion. On the bright side, Jesse Blacker and Matt Lashoff both appear to have recovered from their injuries. Lashoff wasn't on the Marlies clear day roster so he won't be eligible to play unless injuries strike. Eakins hasn't decided yet if Blacker will re-enter the line-up considering how well Percy has played in his absence.

Speaking of Percy, the National Post put together an article about his play so far in the playoffs and how he's meshed with Gardiner:

I have a good feeling about the 2011 draft.

I have high hopes for Biggs and Percy, both seem to have progressed well this season.

LeafsTV has picked up the 3 road games for this series, RogersTV will still air the home games. I imagine they got more than a few comments directed their way about the lack of coverage.

Hey thanks for that!  I was THIS  ><  close to cancelling LeafsTV today for the summer.
