Matthews or BUST

The only reason there is a media rush is because Leafs.

Give it a few days and watch how the media will blow this out of proportion.  "Rumours" will say that there is a discord between management and the player on the contract and we may go to a hold out.  LOL.

It's an actual talking point now in newspapers that he hasn't yet signed an ELC which is strange considering he went #1 overall. What would the holdup possibly be? These contracts are fairly straightforward.

Ekblad, RNH and Tavares signed in September.

Yakupov and Stamkos in late July.

It takes two parties to sign a contract.  If Matthews doesn't want his signing bonus yet, he has no obligation to sign.  Get ready for the media to sink their claws into this team. That's probably the one thing I don't mind about Lou's policy of protecting young players from the media.

I have zero worry in this blown up contract squabbling by the media.  If push came to shove and Matthew's refuses to sign due to Lamoriello being too "unreasonable" over a 1 OA contract, who do you think is more important to the future of the team?

Shanny is far more likely to show Lou the door, than he is to stand by Lou if it meant losing Matthews.

Minority view though it may be, but Lou Lamoriello and his rules irritate the hell out of me.

This is much ado about nothing. Everything will get taken care of. A bunch of media banter.

Well they brought it up again today asking Shanahan this time.  Stupid media.  They will let this drag on each day it hasn't been signed.

You got Auston Matthews number one overall to a lot of fanfare. And yet Auston Matthews is not signed to his entry-level contract as of yet. The second overall pick is. The third overall pick is. How should fans look at that?

Shanahan: They should not be worried at all. I?d like to think ? we haven?t been here a long time ? but I can promise our fans that our management group didn?t get stupid in two weeks. We will take care of it. We understand what we have in Auston Matthews. Auston Matthews will be there in camp and we?re excited to have him. It will all get taken care of. We are not a group that likes to give a heads up as to what we?re doing and what we?re thinking. I?m sure there will be people wondering about it the day it ends up getting announced. I would just say that people can trust this group. Lou Lamoriello has been at this a long time. One thing he said when he came here ? Lou, Mike, myself, we all met ? was ?this is not New Jersey, this is not Detroit? this is Toronto.? So, it will get done. I?m fully confident that Lou will have that done and people don?t have to worry.

What have your early impressions been watching Auston down in Niagara?

Shanahan: He?s impressive. He really is. Obviously when you take a guy first overall, you know he?s a special player, but when you see him up close? maybe a couple of the things that jumped out at me more than I expected ? you see the size, you see the speed, you see the hands and the skill level, but I would say his speed has surprised me. His quickness, his first step. He?s got a long, heavy stride, and he?s not a skater like a Connor McDavid, who you look at and it looks like he?s flying. He?s got more of a lengthy, muscular stride. It might not look like he?s going as fast until you get him up beside some people and you realize he?s pulling away from everybody on the ice. I would say his speed is something that has really impressed us all. And the maturity of him. He?s got his first taste of Toronto media. He?s polite, he?s been raised well. He also knows how to handle himself. So far so good.

Has Matthews demanded a trade yet?

First, let's see how long it takes to get him signed?  At least he didn't tell the Leafs not to draft him.

Quite the contrary.  He had the Leafs as 2nd on the list of teams he wanted to play for, right behind the 'Yotes.  And that was right before the Leafs won the Lottery.

To potentially sign Jimmy Vesey I'm sure the Leafs would have to offer max bonuses. If not, I doubt he would be interested when he will get max in Boston and certainly Buffalo.

So...how can Lou hardball Matthews without following thru with Vesey.

So this contract with Matthews will indicate if we have any chance at Vesey.

I'm sure the Lou-stans will point out that if Vesey really wants to be a Leaf sacrifices will be expected of him. If he signs somewhere else, that's all the proof you need that he only cares about himself.
