Men's Olympic hockey

The real question is how the loss of OV will affect WSH going forward. Because he won't be coming back. NONE of them will be coming back.

Well, I feel bad for the guys on the team to some extent but knowing that this is the event Putin really wanted to win...I can't say I wasn't rooting for this to some extent.

Russians are some of my favourite players, and I absolutely love their skill set, but it's always entertaining seeing them implode and collapse when it matters.

They probably feel the same about the Canadian Juniors...

Not really a good comparison since Russia hasn't won a best-on-best men's tournament since 1981, while the Jr.'s have a recent history of winning their tournament.

So then Russia losing is just par for the course.

Absolutely, but when the games are getting close to being 50/50 outcomes, rationally you should always want the easiest path to the Finals.

Sure, but considering that the likeliest semifinal opponents were going to be one of Russia, Sweden or the US I don't think there's much difference there regardless.

Well, seeing how today's game turned out, I don't think there's any question that Canada paid a very high cost for not winning their last game in regulation.

Honestly, the Russians were primed to implode against a stingy team like the Finns.

I had a nagging suspicion this would happen.

It's bittersweet. A top opponent is now removed from the competition, yet they also happen to be one of the most exciting and entertaining teams to watch.

I don't think there's a whole lot separating Finland/US when it comes down to one game.

You mean today's game where  Finland, who Canada was only able to squeak past, beat the heavily favoured Russians? I'd say the results today calls your entire rationale into question.

Agree to disagree.

I feel a lot more comfortable playing Finland than United States.

If you want to win a gold medal, you have to beat some pretty good teams.

Either way, they'd have to beat 2 out of Finalnd, Sweden and the US in order win gold, so, really, in the end, it doesn't matter all that much. What winning in OT instead of regulation did net Canada is a QF game against Latvia instead of Slovakia - and, I'd call that coming out ahead.

After three games without having to listen to Healy, I am wondering if this is a bad omen that his online mic has been fixed.....
