Apparently the blue jackets have spoken to Marners agent about a potential offer sheet

The Nylander-perhaps here is delicious speculation (it may very well be what CBJ believes). All this tells us, once again, is that Marner is not going to sign an offersheet because he wants to stay in Toronto, which means the offersheet deal he'd actually sign is either a) too rich for other teams to attempt or b) too rich for the Leafs to reasonably match which is a severely career-limiting move for Marner (no Tavares, no PP time with Tavares and Matthews).

Jeff Veillette puts this best:

A stupid Q here but could the Leafs trade Kessel's $1.2 dead cap space away in return for a one way contract at
the same rate and term and then send the player to the Marlies (max $900k savings I believe) and thus opening up
another 900k? I realize the kicker is the 3 years.

4 years @ $9.2M. Leafs vite the bullet to get it done. Marner signs because it walks him to the UFA pay day his team seems to be looking for.

Nope. Can?t trade the Kessel retention.

Firstly, no, not allowed. We don't even get the savings if he went on LTIR (lol). If he retires though...
Secondly, the cap savings for burying a contract is 1.075M this year.

I'd like Dubas to get on the MLSE jet to visit Marner's house in... Thornhill(?) to personally reassure him he will not be traded. And then sign him to a 7M deal for 6 years.

Thornhill isn?t a real place. I know. I grew up there and I?m there right now. :P
