Mitch Marner: what now?

I would love to see a petition started by us, and expanded to all Leaf fans everywhere.  We simply tell Mitch to sign a contract by a certain date (how about at a fair 9.5 Million) or we will boycott all of his advertising exploits in the future, we will simply say to advertisers, we are not interested in his mug selling us shit...let him play hockey for his millions.

Good lord.

I'm not sure what would be sadder, being that upset that a hockey player hasn't signed by mid-July or the implication that if he does sign that you'd be buying products just because he endorsed them.

I already boycott Coca-Cola or whatever energy drink he endorses, but that's only because of that damn polar bear.

What with climate change and all you?ll be drinking coke in 5 or so years when all the polar bears have nowhere left to live

Let me get this straight, you think that your client, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante, who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this person?

Good luck.

I heard a while back someone tweeted Columbus was reached out to Ferris that they were going to go after Marner and got the answer, "yeah, he wants to be a Leaf."

Again, I think the tipping point is Mitch telling Darren "yeah, I'm not missing camp." After what happened to Willy... I think it gets done day before camp. Best offer on the table. He obviously wants to play in Toronto, the market has spoken with the absence of offer sheets (incredibly poor asset management).

Carlo is getting roasted in the comments for moving the goal posts and also arguing based on facts that state Matthews scored more goals in far less playing time.

I think it'll depend on whether or not there's movement on the Leafs' part. If Marner can sign relatively early and think he's won something, even a relatively minor sum, it may play out that way. If the Leafs are holding fast to a number then there's more incentive to continue not to sign into the season.

I don't think there's been an absence of offer sheets, just an absence of the term/money they're looking for. If reports rumors are to be believed Columbus was prepared to do $12.5M but for the full 7 years and Marner's camp wants shorter term. If he actually turned down $12.5 for 7 I don't really know what to say anymore

Yeah that's brutal if true.  The Leafs will have a hard time signing Marner if other teams are really willing to pay that much for him while also ponying up 4 first round draft picks.  Marner is taking a big gamble by turning down a rich contract like that.  He could easily get injured or something within the next 3 seasons or so.

I don't know that you should read a ton into that if it's true outside of Marner just not wanting to sign a 7 year deal. The old ideas that a longer contract is better for the player or that you can just buy UFA years may no longer be true.

Maybe Dubas and Marner are holding off signing a contract until during the regular season when more cap space may open up if the Leafs dump some salary.  I wouldn't read too much into rumours that Marner wants a shorter contract or what dollar figures are being tossed or length of term, because all that is conjecture and we will not know what numbers are good for both sides until Marner actually re-signs.

I appreciate trying to be optimistic, but we have every reason to believe that the two sides are pretty far apart in what they think a fair contract is. Yeah maybe all the numbers and years being thrown out aren't 100% accurate but there's definitely no handshake agreement done here.
