Morgan Rielly

I was in favor of sending Rielly back to junior at the start of the season, then was OK with a look-see, then I got wishy-washy about it.  But now I don't think sending him to the world juniors will accomplish anything for him.

Case in point: last night he made that turnover which resulted in Kane's (2nd?) goal.  The HNIC guys commented on it.  What they didn't remark on was, his very next shift, he ended up not just pinching but somehow getting to the front of the CHI net and almost got a scoring chance.  And then got back to cover his position.

Say what you want about the advisability of doing that so soon after making a very bad turnover, but one thing this kid has in spades is confidence.  He definitely will cost us a few more goals while he learns the league, but once he settles in ... holy cripes.  And if he can develop a good, hard shot, he should be very special indeed.

OK, that wasn't a real hard shot but it was a beauty nonetheless.  :) 8) :o :P

It was a nice one for sure. Hopefully this will open up the flood gates a bit for the kid.

I believe the context was that this is while on the ice with Rielly, so its a narrow consideration.

Nonis and Carlyle to meet tomorrow to decide whether Rielly will play with the Leafs or Team Canada over the Christmas holidays.

If assigned to Team Canada, Rielly is also a strong canidate to be named team captain.

McKenzie says that Rielly won't be loaned to the WJC team.

No big surprise, and, as long as he's getting regular minutes with the Leafs, I'm okay with that. If he starts to become a healthy scratch again, however . . .

They will need Riellly more when the trade Gardiner

Thankfully, the salary cap is preventing Nonis from being able to make the type of trade he'd like to include Gardiner in.

My preference is too let him go to the WJC.  It's extremely self serving and short sighted.  It's 3 weeks where he can go and be a top end guy and gain even more confidence (win or lose) and bring it back with him.

I'm not understanding this decision at all.

The last few games that have gone to OT has really highlighted how electric he can be. Exciting.

He's really making  Burke's 1st overall claim seem not so insane.

Yup.  I at 1st thought it was nuts that he was being compared to Brian Leetch by some in the media before he had even played a game in the NHL but I have been really impressed with Rielly's on ice vision, skating and hockey IQ.  Even Reilly's size @ 6'1" 205 lbs is good.

Don't know if you remember but at that draft on highly respected scout actually compared him to Bobby Orr.
Now that is high praise.

I have no illusions that this team will get a Stanley this year... with all our kids growing up though, I really wanna see this team in 2 years.

Assuming we don't trade Kadri, JVR, Rielly, Gardiner, and a few exceptionals down on the Marlies.

Yay!  The optimistic fans are hanging out again.

I am with you.  With the 2 goaltenders to choose from, all the under 29 year old dmen and the large number of under 29 year old key forwards the Leafs are in the best shape they have been in many years.

Well, Gardiner, JvR, Rielly, etc. were going to get older/better no matter what. The team was in better shape a few days before free agency started -- but, other than that moment, this is better shape than they've been in in years, yeah.
