NHL Awards Discussion

Adam Fox, Norris finalist. Very much deserved but still crazy to see.

Jack touches on why eye test scouts don't like Adam Fox, and why his analytics are very positive. He is also does really well the thing that Marner tries to do, but isn't quite there yet due to how he holds the puck (gravity).

You know ... The force that takes our playoff expectations for Marner and drives them six feet underground.

MacKinnon ends up nabbing that 3rd spot. They flipped my predictions of Crosby getting the 3rd spot for this one and MacKinnon for the Lindsay trophy.

This is the basketball description, where it's much easier to see (and they have player tracking for it).

Every skater on the ice has a gravity, as does the puck but not everybody has the same 'mass' so to speak, and it's situational too.

Here's a hockey example:

Tavares loves to try to drag in multiple defenders, break past the first or second (or third) check by stickhandling under the triangle, and spring his winger for open looks (the Matt Moulson special).

Imagine the Leafs had the Tavares guy during the playoffs... Ugh...

Thanks. Makes sense.

Damien Cox is currently having a multi-day meltdown about Jaccob Slavin winning the Lady Byng.

Living up to his name, as always.

Seriously, a defenceman that plays the kind of minutes that Slavin does against the level of opponent he does, and he only took 1 penalty all season while not playing a particularly physically intimidating game? Certainly points to him being quite gentlemanly.

And that one penalty? turned out to be Albert Einstein a puck over the glass delay of game.

Yeah. Zero stick or player on player fouls. Considering how well he played defensively and how much ice time he had, that's very impressive.

Just to explain a little, Cox's argument is that Slavin shouldn't have won the Lady Byng because he isn't as good of a hockey player as McDavid and Matthews. I'm sure that clears up any confusion here.

This seems par for the course for Cox where he's making a pretty defensible point(The hockey writers do a terrible job with the awards) in service of a petty, ridiculous larger argument he's delivering like an obnoxious lunatic.

Lou wins GM of the year, here are his signings and trades since the end of the last season:

Signings:

Reece Newkirk Signed to Entry-Level Contract
Collin Adams Signed to Entry-Level Contract
Ken Appleby Signed to Standard Contract
Anatoly Golyshev Signed to Entry-Level Contract
Robin Salo Signed to Entry-Level Contract
Cory Schneider Signed to Standard Contract*
Dmytro Timashov Signed to Standard Contract
Matt Martin Signed to Standard Contract*
Andy Greene Signed to 35+ Contract*
Mathew Barzal Signed to Standard Contract
Ryan Pulock Signed to Standard Contract
Joshua Ho-Sang Signed to Standard Contract
AJ Greer Signed to Standard Contract
Parker Wotherspoon Signed to Standard Contract
Mitch Vande Sompel Signed to Standard Contract
Austin Czarnik Signed to Standard Contract*
Grant Hutton Signed to Standard Contract
Sebastian Aho Signed to Standard Contract
Ilya Sorokin Signed to Standard Contract

Trade Accquisitions:

Braydon Coburn Traded from Ottawa Senators*
Travis Zajac Traded from New Jersey Devils*
Kyle Palmieri Traded from New Jersey Devils*

* players accquired from outside of the Islander organization

I get that the islanders are in the final 4, but do these transcations make a GM of the year?

Also, let's not omit what he gave up or let walk:
  • Kyle Burroughs
  • Devon Toews
  • Thomas Greiss
  • A.J. Greer
  • Mason Jobst
  • 2021 first round pick (?-?)
  • conditional draft pick (2022 or 2023 third round pick (Islanders choice) if Islanders advance to 2021 Stanley Cup Finals, else 2022 fourth round)

Honestly, looking at it all together, that's a pretty ordinary year for a GM. Certainly not best in the league.

At the same time I'd be more surprised if the GMs were able to collectively make the correct decision on who should be GM of the year. Unlike every other award they give themselves the chance to vote after the 2nd round to make this easy on themselves.
